newborn constipation

what do you do for newborn constipation? i plan on asking the pediatrician when the office opens, since LO has been constipated since yesterday. He is going, but just a tiny bit, and he is straining very hard (red face, grunting, not sleeping) until he has a BM.

Re: newborn constipation

  • He is not truly constipated unless the poop is dry and hard.  At this age, it is likely just his immature digestive system that is giving him some trouble.  As long as he is going, there isn't much you can do.   If he is on formula, you may want to switch brands and see if that helps.

  • DS hasn't been constipated so I'm not sure, but most of what I've heard you'd want to clear with a doc first at 6 days old.  Things like adding a bit of juice or something to the food...or you could try taking a rectal temp...

But I know my baby used to strain and grunt (still does sometimes) and like I said he's never been stopped up yet.

  • My little one is constipated and we have been in contact with the dr.. don't change the formula unless the dr. tells you to...my dr. suggested prune juice cut with water and mineral oil with his formula - but definitely check with your pedi

  • I know BM babies don't usually get constipated when they're newborns, but I'm not sure about FF.  Call you pedi.  I actually called over the weekend b/c DD went from having poo in every diaper to going every 2 days.  She was kicking and screaming.  Plus, her poo looked different.  He said to give her Karo syrup...she's 2 months tho.
