Is it cruel to give a child the initials BM?

I'm planning out boy names for #2 (just in case) and I keep coming back to Benjamin Cross McLastName.

I think I'm biased because of all the references to BM (in all it's many meanings) on The Bump.  Is it something anyone will snicker at IRL?

  • I've been thinking about the same thing.  We like the name Brady for a boy and we like James for a middle name with it.  So the initials would be BJM, is that really bad??  Hehe.  I asked this on baby names awhile ago and most people said it wasn't that big of a deal.  I'm not sure if I can do it though, so I think we've decided on Levi if we end up having another boy.

  • Oh and also I had a high school friend that had BM as initials and I never thought anything of it before.  Never even crossed my mind.
  • I was thinking that too (love Brynn as a first name for a girl, and our last starts with M, too), and decided it wasn't bad. I can think of several people I known IRL that have B as a first initial and M as a last one, and I never thought twice about it. How often do people really use their initials?
  • hmmm, I would never have even thought of that.  I don't think it would stop me from using a name I really like.
  • I just lol!  My dad and my sister both have the initials BM.  My sister used to hate it when she was in grade school and junior high, but not necessarily because anyone teased her.  She was just sensitive about it.  Her middle initial is J, so once she hit high school she liked to refer to her initials as BJ.  Nice, huh?

I say go for it.  Benjamin is one of my favorites and he'd have the initials BM too!

  • I was an MF until I got married.  I never got made fun of.  I thought it was amusing the older I got.

  • lol

DH did take initials into consideration when picking out names. i would not have BM or BJ.

  • My DS1 intials are BM.  I never once thought about that until you brought it up. lol

  • My DS's initials are B.A.M. so BM like your saying. It never even occurred to me the other abbreviations. I really don't think its a big deal. I mean if kids want to make fun of each other they will find something no matter what your kid is named.
  • LMMFAO.

My married initials are BM. My maiden initials were BK (British Knights, Burger King, etc).

I've only ever had one person bring it up, and I just laughed at him. Mostly because I think it's hilarious!

    I like privacy. A lot.
  • Hmm, well, we gave our son the initials BS...

I wasn't crazy about it but Ben was the ONLY name we could agree on.  And there are also plenty of people around with those initials so I guess it's not the end of the world.  If he doesn't like it he can always throw the middle initial in there.

I think BM is fine.  BJ is fine also - I've known a few and never thought about it.

  • My last name is Mell. So when I got married, my ID at work that appears on everything I do became Smell. The only two names we could agree on for a boy started with an S or a B. I picked the lesser of the two evils.

  • I don't think it is that big of deal, but I still wouldn't do it.
  • I had a kid in my daycare class with the initials BAM.  On everything they labeled with his initials, they wrote "BAM" instead of "BM."  So I would just focus more on all three.

I wouldn't not use a name because of it.  DS's first two initials are ED, FWIW.

  • I have a friend with those initials.  She just writes BAM instead of BM.  Still gets made fun of because of the whole BAM!  thing but better than BM.

Unfortunantly I think that a boy will definitely get picked on for the name BJ.

  • It's the whole reason my cousin's name is John, not Brian.

  • LOL  I hope not because my son's name is Benjamin Zeke McLastname.
