I do payroll for an IT company and I over paid someone last week by $600. I put in a request to cancel the check but that could take until Wednesday. This guy was terminated last week so I doubt he will return the money. I guess I just have to hope that he is either a good guy and will return the money or that the mail was slow and he hasnt gotten his check yet. Meanwhile I'm having a panic attack!

Maybe that will help. Plus, if it's a bigger company $600 really isn't that much to fire someone over. Hope everything turns out alright.

you shouldnt worry about it. even if he cashes the chk your company will probably go fater him to get them money back.

I can totally relate! I was entering a bonus for an employee when I first started my job and missed a decimal place...His $500 bonus ended up being for around $50,000. OOOPPS! And surprisingly payroll didn't catch it and his direct deposit went through. Luckily he was honest and called me to let me know. We just reversed his direct deposit and issued a new one, but talk about stressful!!!

My husband works for one of the top companies in the US and was overpaid twice by about $1500, no one got fired! Crossing my fingers for ya!

I would call the guy and let him know that you know you overpaid him, that you have cancelled the check, and you want him to return the old one and wait for a new one. People tend to be a little more honest when they know you know the truth.
