High-Risk Pregnancy

When you were diagnosed with GD...

Did you see a nutritionist?  See anyone about setting up a food plan?

I didn't have GD when I was pregnant with my son but he came out a GD baby (had glucose issues and spent 4 days in the NICU unit).  I don't want this child to go through that so I want to be on the GD diet and my OB said it was a good idea.  My OB gave me the name of a nuttritionist - but it costs $185.   I just want to see what other ladies did before I spend that much money on someone who will probably just tell me to stay away from sugar and white foods.

Thanks!

Re: When you were diagnosed with GD...

  • Yes, but b/c I was diagnosed with GD it was covered by insurance and I had to go.  Really they could have just given me the booklet and I'd have been able to figure it out, but my GD was controlled by diet, wasn't really bad.

Your dr could do a glucose test now, I had one drawn last week.

  • would you need to see the nutritionist in order to get a prescription for all the blood testing supplies?

I just got diagnosed last week and I'm still impatiently waiting for my appt with the nutritionist so I don't know, but that would be my only concerned.  From what I've read, the diet modifications are usually pretty straight forward and I've already put myself on my own version until my appt.

  • I had to take a 3 hour class offered by our hospital which included a food plan made for me. My insurance covered the cost because I was officially diagnosed with GD.

Basically, they just told me to monitor my carb intake, eat more protein, and gave me examples of meals/snacks to eat within my food plan. You could probably find some online resources that would help give you a good guide of what to eat and what to avoid.
  • Yup. When I was diagnosed with GD, I went to a nutritionalist. Though, since I have the problem and it was diagnosed, insurance covered it.

They set up a full diet plan --- explaining how much I should eat during the day, gave me ideas, etc.

  • I think I will see the nutrionist eventually, but for now they just gave sheets of paper that list what combinations of foods to eat when and then a seperate list of what type of food is in each category.

If you give me your email address, I could scan them and email them to you.

  • Yes, I saw a nutritionist and endocrinologist, but insurance covers it because of my diagnosis.  Can your doc diagnose you so your insurance covers it?  If not, I'd probably DIY.  It's basically common sense...restrict carbs and pair them with protein/fat for the best metabolism of them.  Eat 6 mini meals/day every 3 hours or so.

Honestly, if you follow this pregnancy plan and keep your choices on the low end of the Glycemic Index, you should be fine:

Portion control is key as is incorporating some sort of exercise each day.  GL!

  • Yes, they set me up with one. I saw her once and basically - it was a bit of a waste.

This is my diet plan.  I weigh 181.

    Breakfast - 30 carbs

2 hours later - take sugars

Sugars should be under 120 (2) hours after meal

    Snack  15-30

    Lunch -45 carbs

Sugars should be under 120 (2) hours after meal

    Snack 15-25

     Dinner -45 carbs

You can't spread the carbs out over the day, you can't save them up.  The point is to keep your sugars level.  Get a glucose monitor at the store.    You should also see an Endocronologist to make sure your levels aren't spiking.

If your sugars are high more than two times in a row you really can cause problems for baby.

this is just my plan with my doctor.

  • PS- It's a lot more than staying away from sugar.  Read labels.  EVERYTHING has carbs in it.  If you just for ONE day go by my carb schedule- you will see how eye opening it is.  I thought.. Low carb- no problem, I'll just eat a lot of fruits and veggies, but those have some of the worst carbs.
