2nd Trimester

Glucose test at 17w

So, my doctor wants me to do the 1 hour glucose test this week.  I guess because I was already on the heavier side when I got pregnant so she just wants to be pro-active I suppose.  Has anyone else had to take this test so early?  Any advice, like should I avoid certain foods today before I go do it (I think I will go get it done at the end of the day today)...

  • Honestly, I'd eat normally so you know if your body is metabolizing what you eat regularly. That being said, I wouldn't down an orange Fanta and eat a Snickers on the way in. :-) Good luck. Hope everything turns out fine!

  • I took the test on Friday at 12w6d; I'm guesses because I'm alittle overweight and pregnant with twins. I didn't even know that I was going to take the test until after I met with the Nurse and had to go to the lab for b/w, so I will be asking the Peri about this next Tuesday.
  • I just got my scheduled and got the paperwork.  They said to avoid anything sugary including juice, fruit, syrups in coffee, sugary cereal etc.

But a friend of mine who has GD has found that carbs really kill her numbers.  So even though the doctor said I could eat toast or something like Total before the test, my friend said to stick with protein like bacon and eggs bc toast would have sent her number flying high.  Good luck!

  • Because I am also on the heavy side, my Dr. wanted my done at my second appointment. So I did mine at 11 weeks. I made my appointment for the morning, and didn't eat anything after 8pm the night before and it was fine. GL!

  • My blood sugar levels were on the higher side at 8 weeks and I was asked to go on a diet of no sugar, no white bread/pasta/rice and limit my intake of fruits.  I also walked an hour a day for 3 weeks.  After the 3 weeks, I went back to take another glucose test and it was found that my levels had decreased, but not enough to satisfy the endocrinologist.  So, I was diagnosed with early onset Gestational Diabetes and was put on a low dose of insulin (I'm now at 14 weeks).  It's been a hard adjustment, but with the morning sickness I had in my first tri, it wasn't too hard to stay away from certain foods.  Plus, the walking has given me a lot more energy, which is nice.

I hope the test goes well for you and that you pass with flying colors!  :)  Good luck!!!

  • I had mine last week at 26 weeks and I had to fast for mine...nothing but water before I took my test.  Good luck!
  • My doctor said to try and avoid carbohydrates before the test.  Mine is scheduled for this Thursday morning and I am planning on having a couple of scrambled eggs with cheese for breakfast before I go.  He also said that after you drink the glucose stuff that you shouldn't put anything else in your system, including water, so that it doesn't get diluted or anything.  You might want to wait and actually schedule the appointment for the test on a day when you can plan what you are going to eat instead of doing it "on the fly".  Also, your doctor might have specific instructions for you that you might have to work around that day.  I took the morning off of work for my appointment because there are diet and timing issues with the test that my doctor wants to make sure I follow and it will just be easier if I am at home.

  • I took my first at 18 weeks and passed.  I took another this past week and passed that one too.  I didn't alter my diet at all.  I ate a normal breakfast and went to the lab in the morning.

I would recommend drinking plenty of water before the test because you can't have any fluids for the hour you have to wait and my mouth was super dry.  And bring a magazine or book because you can't leave the lab.

  • I did mine at 8 weeks because the office I go to tests all women over 25 early. I failed the 1 hour test by a few points and passed the 3 hour. I get to do the 1 hour test again at 26 weeks. I had a bowl of cereal the morning of my 1 hour test and I have a feeling that is what put me over.

  • Don't stress too much! I did mine at 11 weeks, and would have done it earlier if I had been in town. It's not a fun hour, but since you're mostly past the morning sickness, it won't be too bad (I was laying on the floor of the lab praying I wouldn't throw up - it was bad bad bad). You will do just fine, and I'll be your food nazi at lunch Wink

Ha, thanks!  They didn't really tell me I shouldn't eat anything specific before I took the test or anything.  They wanted me to take it last week when I went in for my appointment but I didn't know about it and was there on my lunch hour.  I don't have to make an appointment for it, just go down to the lab at anytime and have it done.  Maybe I will chicken out, she said anytime this week but I really just want to get it over with!
