Baby Showers

Saturday and Sunday time preferences and menus?

So we live out of town (about 9 hours driving) from all of our friends and family.

We are doing 2 showers (1 on his side on one side of our home town) and 1 with my side on the other side of our hometown, these 2 suburbs are about 45 minutes apart).

One will be saturday and one will be sunday, so we only have to fly in once.

For the Saturday shower, was thinking 11:30 AM would be a good time, so it did not take up most of the day for people.    The menu for this one (my aunts want me to pick) we were thinking of the following.

1) big green salad with lots of fruit (berries, walnuts, blue cheese on the side)

2) big bowl of waldorf salad (ie- with chicken)

3) rolls

4) mini quiches

5) fruit salad

6) shrimp cocktail

4) mini-scones and assorted pastries

Thoughts on this time and menu?

For the sunday, my SIL is planning.  She wants to do 2 PM on sunday.   I think they are making hot foods, like lasanga, stuffed cabbage, pirogies (spelling is wrong), salad, and cupcakes for dessert.

I think it is a big mish-mash, but she did not ask for help, so I am not saying anything as I don't think it is my place.   However, I am intereted in thoughts on teh time and menu.

TIA!

  • I think it's a little odd that they will be serving a MEAL at the 2 pm time- to me that time would be more for snack type or tea type food not a full heavy meal.

  • I agree on the 2 pm sunday shower being weird.  My wedding shower 6 years ago was the same on his side.

The normally all eat dinner/supper on Sundays at like 3 PM, which is why they do that.   Every single shower they do is like that, always on Sunday, always a giant mish-mash of crazy food.   I just don't say anything as it is not my place... but I fully agree with you.

Do you think the 11:30 AM Saturday needs anything else?

  • I think the time for both showers is fine, but the menu for Saturday shower does nothing for me.  But a part of it is my picky food nature!  Sundays' menu appeals to me much more!

  • The Saturday meal sounds fab. The Sunday meal sounds good too, but the time is a little off for me but lots of people eat big meals on Sunday afternoons. I'm sure everything will be lovely.  Don't worry about it.

  • Mmmm...I'll come to the Sunday shower if you don't mind!  lol  I'm Polish so all foods like that I am totally into.  As for the first menu...it sounds great for a brunch.  The second menu sound fine for a 2 pm shower on a Sunday.  Many people that go to church don't even get out until 12-12:30 so by the time they get their DH and kids home and get to the shower it will be 2 pm...no time to each lunch.  My DD had a shower that started at 2 and she her had hostess put on the invite that there would be a full meal because many people were coming from long distances (2-3 hours) and she didn't want them stopping to eat on the way!  It worked out really well and they were all appreciative.  Mmm...I can taste those pierogies now!
  • For Saturday, I think the times is decent, but personally,  11:30 am is a little early for me on a Saturday, so unless the invite specifically references a brunch, which is what your menu kind of sounds like, I would probably not arrive until 12:30 or 1, but that's just me.

For the Sunday shower, I think the menu is fine, just a little heavy for lunch. However, due to the timing and considering people usually do things a little later on the weekend then they might normally do M-F, I definitely would expect something heavier than appetizers, but maybe not quite the full heavy meal they offering.  The time is good because if people go to church or get a later start to their day, it is a good time, not too early or late.

This!  I am hosting a shower in a few weeks and we chose 2 pm, and will be serving appetizer type foods, chips, dips, fruit and veggie trays, cake and oreo balls.  This is after a normal lunch time, no one will be expecting to be fed lunch unless indicated on the invite, and will more than likely be full from their own.
