Both completely interchangeably. DH thinks coat and jacket are two completely different things though. Sometimes I'll say "will you grab my green jacket?" and he'll go "What green jacket? OH your green coat. Yeah." I have no clue what the difference is so I just go "uh yeah. That's what I meant." lol
It's Florida, baby, so I call it a sweater. Except that it's super cold right now (Florida style), so it's a sweater with a blanket because she doesn't own either a coat or a jacket. (Well, she had a coat up north for Christmas, and I left it there.)
I guess I'd use them fairly interchangeably. Wait, maybe not. I did have a winter coat or a winter jacket, but I didn't have a spring coat. Does that make any sense? I wouldn't use the word "coat" for something light.
I see it more as a length issue than a seasonal issue.
HIgher than hips= jacket
lower than hips= coat
Ex: You can have a springtime, lightweight raincoat, and a puffy, heavyweight ski jacket. The raincoat is longer, and the ski jacket hits around the waist.
Re: Clicky: What do call the thing your DC wears over their clothing?
winter/heavy = coat
spring/fall/lightweight = jacket
This. If it's heavy, I call it a coat. If it's light, then I call it a jacket.
ditto this
This!
i use Coat for a heaver, warmer one for winter.
jackets are lighter and for the fall/spring.
Both.
To me, a coat is heavy and used for super cold weather. A jacket is lighter and used in spring/fall weather.

My silly Lily is almost 4.

This is true for me, too.
Ditto.
