indecision about switching to formula

I have been going back & forth for the past few days trying to decide what to do.  I thought I would post here & see if anyone can offer any advice/insight. . .

I have successfully EBF for almost 3 months with no problems.  I really enjoy it and my son is thriving.

However, I just started a new job.  Starting a new job is hard enough with out the stress of being a new mom & having to pump 3 x a day.  Add to it I am working very closely with my boss--an older male whose wife did not BF their kids.  He has not made an issue about it (and will not--we are lawyers), but I can tell that it makes him a bit uncomfortable.  Add to that, I am wanting to excel and impress at this job so I don't feel 100% comfortable with taking pumping breaks.

So, I thought I would switch to formula.  We gave him 1 bottle of formula a day for the past few days.  I have stopped pumping during the day & my supplemental session that I used to do in the morning.  I thought I could still BF at night & 1st thing in the morning.

Then, I looked at how much formula costs.  Sheesh.  I was thinking I should add that supplemental pumping session in the morning and then one at lunch, if possible (or maybe skip the lunch session).  So we can only feed him formula one time a day.

I just don't know.  There are pros and cons to everything & it is a tough decision to make.  I would appreciate any insight, experience, or advice you have to offer!

Thanks!

Re: indecision about switching to formula

  • I FF and have been thinking about trying to relactate but have the same concerns about pumping and working.

With regard to the cost of formula, we switched from Similac to the Target generic (Up & Up) about a month ago and had no issues.  The Up & Up formula is about half the price of the Similac.

  • I've seen posters that just breastfeed at night and give formula in the daytime.
  • Do you really have to take a pumping break? Do you have your own office? If so, maybe just invest in the FreeStyle or something else that's hands free. I have the FreeStyle and Love it! I just shut my door (with a nice sign that says "Please do not enter if door is shut. Thx!") and keep working while pumping.  I just make sure not to take or schedule any conference calls, etc when I'm pumping since the sound is obnoxious. I also am able to fit a sweatshirt over the FreeStyle so the one time that one of my colleagues (thankfully, a woman) did need to speak with me while I was pumping, I just turned it off briefly and warned her not to laugh at the slightly femme bot look going on under my sweatshirt. :)

I guess I should also add that I'm a lawyer too and started this new job when I was 6 months pregnant, so it's a slightly similar experience.

I don't know if you will see this or not--depends on if you check your old posts or not--

I do have my own office.  I am a recent law grad, so this whole career is new for me.  This 1st week I didnt even have a computer in my office & I am basically shadowing my boss. My friends IRL think it will get easier once I am more independent @ work.

I like the sweatshirt idea!  Thanks for your insight.
