when i was in art school, they were stopping the sale of cadmium content oil paints. Our oil-painting teacher was having a major panic attack and told us all to go buy tons of cadmium orange etc. She claimed it was the best pigment material, regardless of its toxicity, and she insisted we had to have that color on our palette at all times...
granted, college students don't tend to suck on paint the way children would suck on those charms, but i thought it was creepy that the teacher was more concerned about the colors of our paints than she was about our health.

Heh...stay away from my paint stash. I loooooove cad yellow light & cad red. Granted my child will never be sticking any of this in his mouth whether it's on a canvas or in a tube, but still. Basically as long as you don't eat or inhale the pigments, there's no risk. You can even make oil painting safe if you just use walnut oil instead of nasty solvents.
