Quest. from a 3rd tri - How to keep cats out of crib

I have 2 cats and I was wondering in anyone has any success and failure stories/tips on how to keep cats out of the crib after LO arrives.

My 2 adult cats are not aggressive but very curious.  I trust them not to hurt her purposely, but try to snuggle up to her for her body heat.  As of now the plan is to keep the door shut at night and rely on a baby monitor.  I'm hoping there are better ideas out there.

Thank you!

  • We haven't had a problem with our cats, but my SIL put foil in her crib (before the baby was born, obviously), then topped it with lint roller sheets.  It only took the cat trying once and getting a sheet stuck to himself to teach him that the crib was off limits!

  • I was really worried about this, but since DD was born my cat hasn't jumped in the crib or the bassinet once. The cat really doesn't pay much attention to the baby at all.
  • We don't have cats but I know they make crib tents.
  • I've heard filling the crib with empty cans or rolled up tinfoil will train the cats after a few weeks.
  • Our cats went in to the crib before DD was born, but they don't really like going near her because she's so squirmy.  We were worried about them trying to cuddle up to her (especially one cat who's a rub slut) but they both generally avoid her like the plague.  They don't even go near her crib if she's in there.

We let them in the room & on the crib so they can get use to things.  Smokey started sleeping at the foot of the crib.  He's become the cuddle whore since I got pg and I worry about him.

Squirt gun won't work because I'm not going to be able to stay up all night to supervise.

Maybe they won't be interested in her....Thanks for the tips & advice!

  • We put a $10 outdoor wood screen door (found at menards) in place of the bedroom door. That way the cats stay out, but the air still moves and we can see/hear in.

  • Do you have the crib set up yet?  So far, our 2 cats haven't gone in at all and I thought for sure they'd be all over it... so far no interest.  However, we've had great success with using this with our Christmas tree:

If the cats show any sign of going in the crib, I'll put the Sscat in or near it.  It just shoots a loud burst of air so it doesn't hurt them, but scares them away.  Love it!

  • My friend also put foil down in the crib. Her cat freaked when she jumped into it and landed on the foil and hasn't gone near it since.
