Anyone one know a good eye dr. for babies? I want Aiden to get his eyes check before he turns 1. anywhere in the south west metro would be great

  • I would check with his pediatrician too see if they have any recommendations on who you should go to. Do you have a concern about his sight?

  • Is there a reason why you want his eyes checked?  Usually at this young of an age the pediatrician would refer you and should be able to make a recommendation.

  • There is a program out there that will let up a first eye apt for free so they can see if anything is wrong. Given that both Chris & I have eye problems I want to start Aiden out right.

The program is called InfantSEE Here is a link to there sight

  • This is where I brought my DD and my ped recommended it...not quite SW suburbs, though...

  • DD was referred for an eye check around 2 months since she was a preemie.  We went to Northwest Eye.  They have an office in the Childrens West building on 494 and 62.
  • my husband is a participating optometrist with the infantsee program. however, we are not in the SW metro.

PM me if you want his info.

  • Thanks for all this information but I just made an apt with Dr. Jill Hadler for my little Man I will let you all know how it goes

I am very glad to hear you say that, Someone on the nest recommended her.  I know you said your DH was a OD but do you know what they do at this first apt?

  • i'm an optometrist too.

at this first appointment, they determine your baby's visual acuities and do other entrance tests like extra-ocular muscle movement, alignment (to determine strabismus), stereo-acuity, gross visual fields and color testing (may or may not be done).

a refraction is usually done after the baby is cyclopleged. this basically means that strong dilating drops are instilled and any latent refractive error can be determined through onjective testing. cycloplegia is a very common procedure to do with children, as their accommodative muscles are very strong and this helps to relax their focusing power.

if you say that you have a family history of strabismus/amblyopia, i highly recommend that these tests be done. lots of time, if amblyopia is caught soon (before child enters school), the weaker eye can be "trained" to be just as strong as the good eye.

have fun at this appointment. kids are very challenging to work with (you have really a 15 minute window of their attention before they go crazy), but it is really a cool experience. and this infantsee program is wonderful, all parents, regardless of family history should take advantage of it.

  • WOW great thanks for all that information
