Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone put rice cereal in formula earlier than 4mo?

I've had people suggest me to do this because LO spits up a lot but I can't switch to the spit up formula cuz LO is on Nutramigen and she's been eating formula like it's going out of style, especially at night (8-10oz.), but still getting up once or twice in the night to eat.  I've read some stuff online and some of it really freaked me out, like how it's a choking hazard.  Has anyone done this or gotten info. from their pedi on it?  I plan on calling tomorrow.  If you do it, does a fast nipple work (I use Playtex drop-in bottles) or do you have to use a variable nipple?

  • our doc gave us the ok so she would sleep better, she did fine..but slept the same, we have avent bottles and i just made the nipple hole bigger. she still drank the same amount too, shes a piggy.

  • We had to do it due to reflux. It def. helps with spit up and we just went up a level in the nipple.  However it had not affect on his sleeping....he was sleeping 10-12hours a night before adding rice and he still does.
  • We started it at 8 weeks and did for about a month to a month and a half. Our pedi had us do it b/c he was eating way too much and for reflux. I think it becomes a choking hazard when the milk is thick. I never put more than a tablespoon in 5 ounces and you couldn't even see if it was in there. I went up a nipple size and I only did it once ot twice a day.
  • Our pedi said that he only wants cereal given by a spoon.  With the exception of severe reflux, cereal is meant to be the start in teaching them to eat.

  • Pedi told us to put 1 tsp of rice cereal per 2 oz of formula for spitting up.  It helps a lot.  We've done it since 2 months.

  • Ask your pedi.  It is mostly an old wives tale that rice cereal will make your baby sleep longer.

  • We had to start doing this for DD due to her reflux starting at 2 months. Doc said 1/2 teaspoon per ounce. We use Playtex Drop Ins also, and we have stayed with the medium flow nipple since we started putting cereal in her formula, and she takes it great.

I'm interested in doing it to make her sleep better.  I think she sleeps pretty good.  I just want her to stop throwing up so much and maybe help her hunger a bit.

  • I don't know if it was coincidence (sp?), but DD started STTN at 2 months when we put cereal in her bottles. I'm not sure if it is an old wives tale or not, but it worked for her reflux and she sleeps around 10 or so hours each night :)

Geez, I meant I'm NOT doing it for her to sleep better.  Guess I need to double check myself!  lol

  • we've been putting cereal in his bottle since 2 months per our pedi for reflux. I agree with PP that if the milk is really thick then yes, it's a choking hazard, especially if your LO is starving hungry and gulps it down. I just put 1/2 teaspoon in 5 oz and it has made a world of difference with spit up. He sleeps better now but it was after we started the cereal so I think it was a coincidence. We also use the tri cut nipple for cereal (playtex, adn we use drop ins).
