Re: Please tell me about your induction

  • I was induced at 37 weeks for low amniotic fluid. ?Here's the short version:

I was a fingertip dilated ad 50% effaced. ?They started Cervidil at noon, and by midnight I was 1 cm, still 50%. ?They then started low-dose petocin. ?At about 10am they inserted a foley ball. ?At 1:45 my water broke, and about 20 mins later the ball fell out. ?By 2:30 I was 4 cm and 80% and started to feel pain- things started to move very quickly. ?By 3:00 the pain was unbearable and I asked for the epidural. ?By 5:00 I was 10 cm and ready to go. ?Started pushing at about 6:00 and DD was born at 7:16.

Turns out I'm very sensitive to petocin, which is why things moved so quickly for me. ?It was a very smooth process and I have no complaints/regrets- and this is coming from someone who wanted a 100% natural delivery!?

  • Good luck tomorrow!! I was induced, but if you're nervous, I'm not sure I should tell you about mine...it wasn't fun.  My epidural only worked on half my body, I got an infection because my water had been broken for too long and ended up spiking almost a 103 degree fever, pushed for an hour and a half and LO got stuck and ended up with a c-section.  All in all, I still ended up with a sweet healthy little boy and that's all that matters.

If you want all the gorey details, here's the link where I posted my birth story

    https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/28681718.aspx

You can do it.  Keep in mind the finish line and remember that no matter what you have to go through, your LO is waiting to meet you!

Good luck again, hope everything goes smoothly for you!

  • My induction started on 12/28 at 7pm.  They started me off with an IV of fluids and then inserted Cervadril (it was like a rolled up balloon) It did not hurt.  This was to hopefully help my cervix soften so I can dialate more. They gave me something to sleep - Benadryl and it actually kept me awake.

I had mild contractions / cramping through the night, but nothing unbearable.  In the morning they took the cervadril out at 9am and I was only 1cm dilated.  They started the pitocin at 10am.  As soon as they started the pitocin, I could actually recognize a real contraction. They keep turning the pit up thoughout the morning. Around 1pm - they checked me and I was 4cm dilated. My contractions were pretty painful at this point - so I asked for the Epi. At 2pm - right after I got my epi - they broke my water and continued the pitocin.  By 4pm - I was 10cm dilated.

I had trouble pushing at that time as my Epi was wearing off....so they topped me off and I had to wait to push because I couldn't feel anything.  They ended up turning my epi off at 7pm and I delivered vaginally at 10:51pm (sans drugs...ouch)  But honestly - the pain was the last thing on my mind while I was pushing to try to get her out.

All in all, my induction was a success and I was scared when I first went to the hospital.....my advice is try to relax as much as you can...take the sleep aid that they may offer ( i recommend ambien)

    Good Luck to you!!

  • We scheduled my induction for 39 wks because the hospital "gets nervous" when diabetics go overdue (and my due date was Christmas). I went to the hospital at 9 a.m., and they were busy so they waited until 11 a.m. to start a very slow dose of Pitocin. I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced when I went in.

They left us alone for an hour at a time, and slowly turned up the Pitocin each hour. Sometimes they forgot and would jack it up later. I slowly progressed to 3-4 cm by 10 hrs of labor.

My blood glucose levels were high, but they did nothing to correct them. I was on a sodium/sugar drip and a pitocin/sugar drip. All of my bags had glucose in them. That was eventually eliminated. Also, air kept going through my lines, which really really scared me. I could see the bubbles going into my hand IV. They all said it was ok, and I looked it up online. I guess it was safe, but it still freaked me out.

They began increasing the Pit level quickly at 12 hrs, and my contractions got horrible. Prior to that I was having a grand time with my family. Contractions hurt, but I could handle it. When my contractions became regular and close together, I was 6-7 cm and  75% effaced; however, LO's heart rate was unstable. I had to turn on my side, which for some reason made the contractions unbearable. The same contractions on my back were fine, but on my side I couldn't take it.

I stalled at 6 cm, and got an epi at 18 hrs - had wanted a natural birth :( Two hours later they suggested a c-section because LO's heart rate was getting worse and my progress was stalled, especially since the epi.

At 21 hrs I went into the operating room, and LO was born at 11 a.m. the next day...24 hrs exactly after my pit drip began. The c-section was really scary because I've never had a medical procedure before. PM me if you want the yucky details about that.

  • Good luck!! Dont be nervous :)

Well, I was induced at 38 weeks for high blood pressure and the induction went great! The doctors induced me at 11 AM with pitocin, broke my water at 11:30, I received my epidural around 2 PM and my beautiful baby boy was born at 8:30!

  • Loved my birth experience

This is a C/P from my birth story

I was induced at exactly 39 weeks a week ago today. I came into the hospital on Tuesday night to have the Cervadil inserted, at that point I was one cm dilated. I had the Cervadil placed at 10:40 and hung out and ate with my husband. You have to lay flat for 2 hours, and nearing the end of that two hours things started to get interesting. Turns out the Cervadil kicked me into labor. I was feeling very strong contractions and back pain and couldn't find a comfortable position to save my life. They gave me an injection to try to take the edge off the pain, it did nothing.

Around 3 am after writhing around in the bed and the world's most painful internal, they called the Epi Doctor. Getting the Epi in the midst of my horrible contractions was definately a low point, but as soon as the Epi was in.... total relief... I could have cried from happiness as I watched my contractions on the monitor and couldn't feel a thing! At that point I was 2-3 cm dialated and they broke my water and placed an internal contraction monitor, I didn't feel a thing.

Wednesday morning at around 7 am I was dialated to 4 and they started the Pit. I was having perfect little contractions on the monitor all morning and afternoon... progressing about a cm every 1-2 hours.

At about 4 pm.. I could start to feel the contractions again, they readjusted me and nothing seemed to help... turns out I was fully dilated with the contractions and it was time to start pushing. By this point I was so thirsty/hungry that I was ready to get the show on the road. The nurse and I tried some pushing and she seemed impressed.. the Dr was called and 15 min of pushing later Emaline Elizabeth was born at 7lbs 21 in. Small tear, no stitches, yay! They brought me orange juice and my baby and life was good.

I honestly found the experience to be so so so positive. I couldn't have asked for any better nurses and my DH was just so supportive.

  • I was induced on Mon. the 4th and I was sooo nervous about it too. ?I had really wanted to be able to naturally. ?It honestly was a wonderful experience though, and I wouldn't change a thing.

Got foley bulb inserted Sun night which broke my water. ?Next morning I was dilated to a 4 and they started pit at 5:30 am. ?7:30 the contractions started to get horrible, and by 9:30 I asked for the epi. ?There was some huge delay w/ my blood work for the epi, and so I never did get the epidural started til 10:45, after I was already feeling the urge to push, but I was in so much pain I didn't even say anything to the nurse, I just let my body do its thing. ?Right after they did the epi, I did say something to her, and when she checked me I was a 10 and ready to push. ?Pushed through 3 contractions and my baby girl was born at 11:18 am. ?The epi never had time to kick in, so it was pretty much a natural birth. ?I might have gotten a little bit of it afterwards, but I could still move my legs and feel everything they were doing as they were stitching me up, etc.

Just try to relax as much as you can, and enjoy the experience as much as possible. ?It seemed all the induction stories I read beforehand were terrible and ended up with a c-section, so I had convinced myself there was no way I would possibly have a positive induction experience, and was really having a hard time with it. ?I completely understand your nervousness. ?That's all I could think about for the entire week before my induction.

And, of course, no matter what happens, when you hold your sweet baby for the 1st time, it won't matter at all, as long as your LO is okay. ?Good luck tomorrow, and let us know how it goes!

This is almost exactly my story, except my sugars were running low so they had me on a bag of dextrose in IV.  I had the same issue with the LO's heart rate dropping plus my blood pressure was rising.  And my outcome was the same too -emergency c/s after 16 hours of labor.  Fun stuff.  But my baby boy is 100% healthy, so that;s all that counts!

  • I was about 1 cm and 50% effaced when I was induced at 40 weeks. I had the cervadil placed at 7 p.m. and had already been contracting on my own without knowing it. The contractions got really intense by about 11 p.m. and they took the cervadil out. By 5 a.m. I was begging for the epi and got it and then I felt great. I never needed pitocin because I progressed (while very slow) on my own and was ready to start pushing by 3 p.m. the next afternoon. After 2 hours of pushing and vomitting a few times, my OB told me that my LO was still at 0 station and not coming down because his head wasn't fitting through my pelvis. Plus his heart rate kept dropping because the cord was getting pinched.

At that time the OB made the decision that I was going to have a c-section and he was out about 15 minutes later. The c-section scared the crap out of me, but I lived through it and was so happy to finally have him here and have "team green" become "team blue." The recovery has not been easy, but it gets better everyday. I was in the hospital four nights and came home a week ago today.

I was scared of induction, too, from all of the horror stories. Except for having to have the c-section because of his heart rate, it wasn't as horrible for me as everyone said it would be. That being said, I'm thrilled that it's over and to be a mommy.

GL and enjoy every minute - even the painful ones!?

  • i don't have time for the whole story as my 1 year old is trying to help me type right now :)

but, I've had 2 inductions and they both went very smoothly... don't be worried... it's really not bad at all!  Good luck and congrats!

  • I was induced at 41 weeks. Went in at 8:00 pm and was given cervadil first. It made her heart rate go up so after 2 hours it was taken out. Contractions started and at 2:00 am I was given pitocin and statal. The contractions were bad and the statal really didn't help except it would make me fall asleep for like 45 minutes. i would wake up in pain. At 7ish they gave me and epidural only 2cm dialated. My OB broke my water at 8 and then we waited. The nurses kept coming in and telling us they didn't like how her heart rate would drop with every contraction and put me on oxygen. That didn't help and at 9:15 three nurses came rushing in and said i was getting a Csection. It was so crazy and such a blur. My DH was given some scrubs to put on and before I knew it my mom  and MIL were kissing me and telling me good luck and away we went. At this point I could not even move the lower half of my body because of epidural. Once in the surgery room it took 5 minutes to prep me they brought DH in and then in 3 minutes at 9:54 she was born. All the nurses yelled BIG BABY!. They put her on oxygen for a couple of minutes because she had meconium in her mouth but besides that she was fine.

Inducing all in all wasn't to bad and I actually liked getting a C section. Before the epidual my contractions were very painful, but I was able to breathe my way through them. It was 13 hours but it seemed like 13 minutes. Good Luck!

  • I was induced at 41w. I went in on a thursday at 5pm for cervadil. When I got there I was only 1cm, +3 station and about 60%. I started having regular, but pretty mild contrax around 1am, not really painful, but unfortunately kept me from sleeping. 6am friday they removed the cervadil and 30min later we started pitocin. Contrax got painful by 9:30, to the point where I was crying so I got a shot of pian meds. I was not really progressing all day, by 3pm I had only made it to 3cm. They broke my water, and I finally got to get an epidural shortly after. Still slowly progressing until about midnight, when things started to speed up. About 3:30am I was at 9.5cm and felt the need to push. The last .5cm wasn't going away, and my OB ordered a booster of the epi so I could sleep for an hour while I labored down the rest of the way and LO hopefully moved lower (was only at 0 station). I slept until 5am, they woke me up and I was at 10cm and LO was at +2! I pushed for one hour and she finally made it out!
  • I was induced at 41 weeks 2 days due to low amniotic fluid.  I was 2 cm and at station -2 before they started any medications.  They started me on miosprostal (cytotek) @ 10 am.  I had another dose @ 2 pm since I hadn't made any progress with the first dose.  Contractions started @ about 4 pm.  They didn't get intense until about 11 pm.  I got an epidural @ 1 am.  At that point I was 3 cm.  My contractions slowed down b/c of the epidural which they thought was going to happen so they started me on pitocin.  By 5 am I was 5 cm.  By 9 am I was 10 cm and my son was born @ 10:43 am.

So from start to finish it was just over 25 hours, which I don't think was too bad, and I was only actually in labor for like 18 hours.  I thought the whole process went pretty well, and this was my first.  GL!
