How bad is a swim skirt bottom?

It used to be when I looked at swim skirts, I thought of my grandmother. She always wore swimsuits with a ruffled bottom "to hide my thighs". However, I think it might be better to go with a skirt for dealing with 2 kids and not having to worry about flashing everyone... or possibly shaving for that matter =P

So what's your take on it? Old lady or acceptable for mommy wear? I was looking at this one from Eddie Bauer but will look at Lands End too

  • nms, personally.  But I think as long as it's fitted and paired with a cute, fitted top, you won't look old ladyish at all.

mandie rocks the string bikini, obv.

I wear a little more flared out skirt bottom and like that when I bend over, I ain't sharing the goods.

  • They not just for old ladies anymore, I've seen some really cute ones.  I like the boyshorts, I usually get those nowadays.

  • That's what I'm wearing these days. I am not liking the way my butt looks in a regular suit anymore. I don't think the one I have looks old ladyish at all and I don't think the one you posted does either. I say go for it.

  • I'm not crazy about the one you posted, but I have seen some that I like and even have a suit that has a ruffle "skirt" on it from Gap (it's not long at all). I like them and they really do help hide the parts of my thighs/hips that I don't like. Ditto mlf though - I think the skirt and the top need to be more fitted to look trendy.

    Ditto.

I think as it's a slim, solid-colored skirt (like the one pictured) and not "ruffly" and patterned you'll be fine.

  • I've always loved them.  Sure, there are some that are distinctly Your Grandma, but the good ones are all hot 40s pinup-y.  I'm all about that.

    ETA:  And by "40s" I mean 1940s, not "Hi, I'm in my 40s."  :)

  • I personally probably wouldn't wear one, but I have seen some girls wear them at my parents country club that are really stylish and cute!

  • They are really popular at the store with all ages. One of my trendiest lines has a "flirty" bottom this year that is a short skirt. Personally, I have skirt bottoms and skirt cover-ups and really like them both.

  • They are a necessity for me these days so like them or not they are the way to go, in my case.
I do think they ones I have are not matronly.  And I am on the hunt for a new one this year.  The kind that are made out of the "miracle" fabric are even better!
  • I hate the area where my butt/thighs join, so I have been a big fan of the swim skirt for a while.  Plus, it's nice to just throw on a tank top and not have to put on a skirt/shorts to cover up.  Lands End, Athleta and J.Crew make some nice ones that don't look grandma-ish.  :)

  • I thik that a sarong would be cuter, but that's just me. But I've liked the ones I've seen that look similar to the mini-tennis skirts.

  • I wouldn't wear one, but that's more because DH would make fun of me. However, he read your post and gave it a thumbs up. ;)
I was also going to suggest Athleta- their stuff is crazy cute. If they made tops for huge boobies I'd totally buy a suit from there. In any case, you'll look great in whatever you wear.

I prefer a backwards thong, myself, but I like your style.

  • i hope theyre fashionable bc i rocked a flirty skirt suit all summer long and got lots of compliments on it. i hope people werent lying b/c i looked like such a loser.

  • I think because you are naturally thin and trim like the model, it'll look cute on you.  On the rest of us wooly mamoth-leg gals like myself...it just looks like we're trying to cover something up!  lol  But on a person like yourself who you can tell is naturally trim, it looks like a very suitable (no pun intended) "modest but adorable mommy" style.
  • I finally gave in and bought a swimming suit with a skirt bottom this past summer. It is kind of a retro-looking/1940's style but looks cute and not matronly. I have gotten tons of compliments on the suit, and it really minimizes my thighs and bottom, which are sadly not so minimal.

I feel so much less self-conscious with the little skirt, which is nice. Less need for a cover-up or shorts when out of the pool.

So I say go for the skirt suit.

LOL! What a great way to cover the rear!
