Breastfeeding

Not sure what to do now

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and originally decided to breastfeed and bottlefeed.  But after doing the birthing class today, it seems like breastfeeding is the best option available.  Now if you couldn't tell, I'm a first time mother to a definite miracle child.  So I want to do what's best for me and my baby.  I'm just totally confused.  My step-mom did both for all 3 of my siblings...and they turned out just fine.  So should I stick with my original plan?  Or should I just breastfeed?

Also...if I do breastfeed, should I use a breast pump?  My whole thing is I don't see adding a breast pump to my registry, if I don't use it...or if I end up having only one child.  It would be a waste of money.  What do you end up doing with the used breast pump???  Give it away, sell it, or throw it away???

I know...I'm all over the place.  Just a new mother totally confused and needing some motherly assistance.  Embarrassed

  • If you are only going to breastfeed then you don't need a pump.  I breastfeed but also pump so she can have a bottle when I'm at work.

Used pumps are usually not sold.

The most important thing is to feed your LO, and, in my opinion, ultimately it doesn't matter which way you choose to do that.  I chose BF because it's free (I'm super cheap) and it's the best food for baby.  That being said, if BFing hadn't worked or I decided to stop (which I've considered many times) I have no problem at all giving Drew formula.  It's also an excellent food for LOs.

Ultimately the decision has to be yours - no one else can tell you how to feed your LO.  I will say this though: consider all the options, make a decision, then be willing to totally change your plan if things don't work!

  • Since you aren't quite sure what is going to work best for you since LO isn't here yet my advice is to give it a shot. It sounds like they talked about breastfeeding in your childbirth class but I would strongly encourage you to look into a breastfeeding class, for me it was so helpful to see and practice the different holds and to watch the video to understand when baby is eating and swallowing and when baby is just sucking. Also it will probably help give you more information to help with your decision.

I would recomend starting off exclusivly breastfeeding when LO arrives to help your milk come in and establish your supply. Once that is set you can decide where you are, if you want to add in bottles or if  you want to continue to ebf. If you do decide to add in bottles you can do expressed breast milk or formula, which ever you feel works best for your family.

As for the pump question, are you going back to work? If you are was your original plan to continue to bf once back at work? If yes then you should get a pump, you can add it to the registry after your shower so that guests don't see it but you can use your completion coupon on it. Once they are open they are not returnable but if you want one just in case you can wait to open it. If you are planning on SAH or you weren't planning on pumping at work then you may want to hold off and either rent a pump for a few weeks or you can pick up a manual pump. I got a Medela Harmony manual for $35 at Target. HTH

  • I will look into the breastfeeding class and hopefully they'll help me make my decision a little easier.  I do plan on BF only in the beginning.  I would love to be a SAHM, but it all depends on if my husband finds a job by then (thank you economy).  If he finds a job, it would be pointless for me to go back to work cause my paycheck would be going strictly to daycare.  So at this point...I'm going back.
  • You've already gotten good advice, I only have one thought to add.  You can always stop BFing, but if you decide later that you wish you had tried it, it is incredibly difficult (for some, impossible) to induce lactation.

Try learning as much as possible as you can now.  Knowledge is power!  Ready breast feeding books, read the le leche league's website, talk to other mothers you know, etc.
