Babies: 3 - 6 Months

DS is allergic to rice cereal?

The pedi asked us to try it out before his 4 month appointment later this month and I wasn't going to because we were waiting 6 months but I'm glad I did.

When we woke up this morning he had a red rash on his cheeks, chin and nose.  Looking at the box it has the second ingredient listed as Soy Oil so I'm wondering if he's allergic to soy?

He's also on Alimentum because of his eczema - suspected milk allergy, so I guess it should be a huge shock.  I never did try soy formula - just went straight to hypoallergenic.

Has anyone else noticed a reaction to rice cereal?

  • we haven't done rice cereal but my pedi always tells me about his 3yo that was allergic to rice cereal.  he has outgrown the allergy since then.

  • Hannah had a rash on her face but I think it was from all the slober.  Daddy was wiping it off of her face (up/down/around/etc) rather then dabbing it off. I think it was all the drool anyway. It's gone with a few days of vasiline on her face because of how dry it's been.

I was kind of wondering about that too since he just started drooling this week.  I've been using the Aquaphor ointment.  I'll just stop with the cereal and watch and wait for now I guess.  Bummer though, I'm going to have one of those babies allergic to everything!

  • Were on Alimentum for a milk and soy allergy (and for reflux) but she can take rice cereal just fine, that really stinks that he is allergic.

I had no idea that there was soy oil in there, what brand do you use? We use Earth Best.

Gerber.  I'll check Earth Best online and see what the ingredients are, that would great if that brand doesn't have the soy oil.

This is what the online ingredients say:

Ingredients: Organic Brown Rice, Organic Rice Bran Extract, Tocopherols (Vitamin E), alpha-Amylase (Enzyme), Electrolytic Iron.

Maybe that's why L isnt allergic, I dont see anything about Soy. Maybe a good alternative just to be on the safe side? Now I'm kinda glad we didn't try anything else I didnt even think that Soy would be in rice...I just picked this because it was Organic.

  • We use "healthy baby" organic rice cereal.  She's sensitive to it so I looked for the first box that clearly said "No Soy".
  • DD#1 got the full body rash to rice cereal.  I quit, and when the rash was gone, started vegetables.  She eats rice fine now, but is allergic to peanuts, sesame and grass.
