Wash your veggies with soap?

At DS's 4 month appt. Doc and I discussed solids. He brought it up...my plan is to wait until 6 months and do BLW...But I didn't tell him that right away. We talked about making your own food and he suggested you don't make your own of the root vegetables..because they are grown in soil with POOP! and he said to wash them with soap always??? do you do this? I rinse my fruit and veggies but I've never put soap on them. Do you think he means dish soap? hand soap? for real? He said the baby food companies actually test the soil everything is grown in and it's safer.

Never crossed my mind to use soap. Just always used plain water.

I've never heard of this so I googled and found this article:

Washing fruits and vegetables with soap or detergent or using commercial produce washes is not recommended.

I was my veggies and fruit with a veggie and fruit spray wash.. its made of grapefruit extract and something else.. it gets the wax off

Exactly this. You take off the skin anyway and cook them.

Maybe he meant that root vegetables may be grown in soil that is high in nitrates. This can cause an anemia in a baby. It is not recommended that you thin purees of root vegetables (carrots, beets) with the water they were cooked in. I am not sure if it is for fresh and frozen or just fresh root vegetables. The baby cookbook that I read this in suggested buying these vegetables prepared until baby is older.

poop DOES make a great natural fertilizer and it's not just as simple as eating poop... lol However, I'd still choose that over chemicals and pesticides that are in jarred baby food (eventhe organic jars have BPA in them)
