Re: what was your first clue you were in labor?

  • I woke up at 5am, and immediately had a contraction. Just thought I had cramps. I was 5 days late, you'd think I would know. I got in the bathtub cause I couldnt go back to sleep, and thought to myself "I should get my clock and time these". Sure enough, I woke up with my contractions 5 minutes apart.

  • woke up around 4am...thought i pulled a muscle in my stomach...it went away...5 min later it came back....then went away 5 min later it came back...then went away. Thats what it was! But i had an appt that morning so I didnt even tell my husband about the contractions because i wasnt sure. Sure enough the doc sent me to the hospital that morning!
  • The nurse stuck her hand up me and said "uh oh"

  • I woke up spotting and with the loss of my MP the morning of my due date.  I was pretty sure it was going to be very soon.

I was woken up from my nap with pressure and being "uncomfortable", but not in pain.(the pain came an hour later....thank God we were at the hospital).

ETA...I had DS 5 hours later.

  • It woke me up in the middle of the night with back pain/contractions.  I never had BH contractions so I thought it must be the real thing now even though I was only 38 weeks.  I drank the glass of water and laid down for an hour and they never were more than 5 minutes apart.

  • lol, my water broke as i was sitting down to go to the bathroom the morning of the day ds was born
  • Contractions that started after pitocin.

Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.
  • My water broke.

I am still kinda sad that I missed out on the whole waiting, timing, anticipation thing.  But I'm sure I'd feel differently if I had a bunch of false alarms.

  • With DD: nothing. Absolutely nothing. Even after being hooked up to monitors and "seeing" contractions every 2 minutes, my water breaking, and dilating from 0-5 in less than 2 hours I felt no different.

With DS: Contractions and then vomiting. I started having regular, timeable contractions and was pretty sure. And when the vomiting started, I knew.

  • I went in to be induced and the nurse said "uhm we can't induce you. You are in active labor. You're at a good four." She also had this look like "who doesn't know they are in active labor?!"

I had contractions for two days that I was sure were "it" but DD's head wasn't on my cervix so they were useless. Sad My MW thought pit might make my contrax stronger and force her to move. Apparently she moved all on her own before I got to the hospital. She just wanted to wait until 42 weeks to come out.

  • i felt uncomfortable and sweaty all day, the next morning (friday) i woke up and saw my mucous plug. contractions started... and faded... then started.  she was born late saturday night.
  • I woke up and as soon as I stood out of bed I felt a small gush.  I went to the bathroom, showered and got ready for work.  It didn't really happen again.  I called the nurse and she said it was probably just a loose bladder.  It happened about 10 times on my way to work and more while I worked for an hour.  I called the nurse and they told me to come in and get checked.  Tests came back positive for amniotic fluid and DD was born about 15 hours later!
  • with DS1 I had bloody show and then regular contractions.  With DS2 contractions just started on their own after DH and I had sex :)
  • my water broke in the livingroom :)

  • I woke up to go to the bathroom and just felt odd. I kept feeling like I had to go to the bathroom, but when I went in there nothing happened. I then realized that I was having contractions 5 minutes apart.

  • I was having "pains" but they were more annoying than painful. I thought the baby was just moving/kicking more aggressively and that they weren't contractions. A few hours later I went to the bathroom and had bloody show so that clued me in! After that the "pains" got closer together and I could tell they were contractions.

  • I woke up at 1am to contractions 7min apart.  They hurt.....my BH didn't hurt.  And the dog was under the bed covers licking my feet.  She is not allowed under the covers!  I always wonder if she knew.

I did not have any bloody show or even water breaking.  My water didn't break until hour 18 when I finally was 10cm.

  • I woke up twice in the night thinking I had peed myself. When I smelled it and it had no smell I figured it was my water. I was right. DD was born 18 hours later.
  • My stomach started cramping, then back labor contractions started....Yeeeooch.
  • I had consistent contractions 8-10 minutes apart, and I was 4 days past my due date - I just knew.
  • I knew something was up when a huge glob of blood came out of me (bigger than a golfball).

I really knew it was time when the hospital checked me for progress shortly after that and I was 5cm dilated and the u/s showed a placental abruption, and they told me I was being admitted.

  • I started having contractions that didn't hurt very much and were about 10 minutes apart, so I went to work the next morning and had them all day long.  When I got home, at about 5:30 pm, they started hurting and got to about 4-5 minutes apart.  I tried sleeping cause I knew it was starting but I *jumped* out of bed every time they hit... Went to the hospital at midnight and was 4 cm.
  • I had had my 39wk apointment the day before and was told I was 2cm and 50% effaced. No biggie, I assumed I'd have her at 42wks anyway :) Woke up the next morning at 8am with my first contrax and had her 6hrs later.

I knew when I had the contrax that it was "it" but I thought I'd have...oh.....at least triple the amount of time to actually get to it.

  • My water broke. Surprise

I was taking a nap, and woke up because I felt a bit of a "leak". When I stood up, I suddenly felt an achy, crampy pain. Made my way into the bathroom, still trying to figure out if it was really my water, and had another contraction within 3 minutes. Started timing them on the computer, and they were immediately 3 mins apart, each lasting 1 min... so I took a quick shower, DH got home, I ate a bagel while hunched on the floor in pain... then we grabbed a cab to the hospital.

Lyla was born less than 5 hours later!

  • The contractions that came every 3 minutes that had me doubled over in pain.  That combined with the feeling that someone was stabbing me in the back with every contraction led me to believe that I was about to have a baby.  Oh and the fact that I was a week late too. ;)
  • Umm nothing! I went in for my bi-weekly NST and they told me I was having ctx 8 min apart. They sent me to L&D, where I was 1cm dilated. Had me walk the halls for an hour and went to 2cm.

This was Friday and I had a c/s sched for Monday, so they got me on the books for the OR!

I wouldn't say I "felt" like I was in labor till I hit about 4cm- about an hour before they did the c/s. And they told me my ctx were really hard and strong even before then!

Poor DH is scared I won't know I'm in labor next time and baby will be born at home- lol! I highly doubt it!

  • It was my first day of my maternity leave and my water broke at 5:30am, the same time my alarm should have been going off if I had set it.  I guess it was time to get up and get going. :o)  Contractions started about half hour later.

  • I woke up at 2:30 am and had to poop.  I had a lot of cramping, but didn't think anything of it.  At 3:30 I again woke up with contractions.  I was 1 day early so I was hoping it was the real thing.  I never had any contractions prior to this.
