If you're being induced - WHY?

I was induced last pregnancy due to pre-e. It was a great experience. This pregnancy I am healthy and there is no reason for an induction.  Nonetheless, since I had such a good experience last time, I asked my doc about another induction.  She said,  'Things have changed in the last 2 years. The American Association of OBs is now recommending no non-medical inductions before 39 weeks and the XYZ hospital (where I will deliver) won't support non-medical induction before 40 weeks.'  Interesting.

So....if you are being induced for non-medical reasons before 40 weeks, WHY?   (NO judgment from me, just wondering about how you ended up there.)

Re: If you're being induced - WHY?

  • I *might* be induced but it would be for a medical reason - bp issues.

I am happy to hear one positive induction story! Big Smile

Oh it was great - I would happily do it again. Pitocin hooked up at 2pm, contrax started immediately, epi received at 4pm, water broken at 5pm, 10cm at 8pm, baby born at 8:50pm.  A tiny tear that required 2 stitches. Don't listen to the horror stories.

  • I have an induction scheduled for 39 w 5 days (essentially 40 weeks) only because DH is coming home from deployment and I want him to meet his son. I don't want him home on his two weeks leave just watching me get more and more overdue. Although I highly doubt I'll make it that far. I've been contracting since yesterday although nothing regular...but if I make it to 40 weeks I will be surprised. I was induced with DD due to pre-e and it was awful so I really want this baby to come before the scheduled induction. But I won't deprive my DH of meeting his son when he only gets two weeks to be home either.
  • At my 38 week appointment (Thursday) I was 100% effaced and 2 cm dilated.  My OB said there's of course no way to tell when things will get going, and asked if I would be interested in scheduling an induction this week or if I would rather wait it out.  We went ahead and scheduled the induction for Tuesday (I'll be 39 weeks), it's purely elective.  Glad to hear you had a great experience!

(note that I write this as I sit here having some good contractions...I have my doubts that I'll make it to Tuesday but it's nice to have the end date just in case!)

  • Well, my last day of work was 1/3, and my company will cover Cobra for 6 weeks.  Then it becomes roughly $800/month for us to pay.  (We switch to DH's insurance afterward, but can't while pregnant)

I'm thinking of asking my doc if they'll consider inducing a week early to fit that window.  I don't know if they'll do it though.

    Great!

Your son is sooo cute and I love his name!

  • I was induced the 1st time for high blood pressure and also had a fast labor - about 4.5 hours including 35 mins of pushing. I tore and the dr cut me, but I'm just happy it was fast.

B/c I had such a fast labor last time, I'm nervous about what it will be like if I go through the "regular" way.  You're first, flowerchild, so I'm curious what yours will be like.  Of course, I hope everything goes well with you.

  • I'm being induced on Monday for several reasons. The doctor ultimately left it up to us (so it was a recommended elective induction), but really recommended it due to the following reasons:

-He suspects that my due date is actually closer to 1/4-1/8, which would put me just over 40 weeks at the time of induction rather than just under it.

-The baby's positioning is both pinching a nerve, and causing decreased circulation for me. Meaning that I'm in quite a lot of pain, and also that I randomly pass out several times a day (or get extremely disoriented if I don't pass out). Consequently, I'm pretty much house-bound, and even just being home alone is scary becausse I never know when I'm going to konk out. This issue won't resolve until the baby is born.

    - My blood pressure has slowly been creeping up with each appt, and they don't want it to develop into an issue.

-I'm already almost 4cm dilated, so he believes that since I'm favorable to an induction already, the benefits outweigh the risks.

  • Im being induced for non medical reasons. Mainly for scheduling purposes...it works better so that my mom can be here (she lives out of state) and I think im really gonna need her. It works better for my "friend" who has been an absolute blessing to me. He's not the father but has taken care of me, consoled me, and taking baby classes to help me deliver, and it works for my doctor. In a lot of situations women end up having another doc besides their own delivering their baby. For some the experience is good...for others not so good. Call me spoiled but I refuse to have anyone but my OB deliver my baby. She has been there for me since day 1 including the miscarriage prior to this preg. I just dont want anyone else to touch me...she knows my history, she knows my temperament and I want her to embrace the joy I will have when DD comes into the world. My Dr definitely deserves it bc I can be quite a handful! lol Of course, since its a non medical reason it can not be done before 39wks which is cool with me. Ive gone this long and I want to make sure DD is fully developed.
  • We're not going to do the induction route but my doctor will induce at 39w for nonmedical reasons if you want to and if you get a decent bishop's score. I forget the exact number.

We are having a c/s at 39w2d b/c of baby's size, clotting issues and a few other medical reasons. Or earlier if baby decides to come earlier.

  • I may be induced but it won't be til after 41 wks... my practice doesn't like women to exceed 41wks.  We'll see what happens.

This is the same for me, though I'm going to try to do EVERYTHING I can do naturally induce instead of having the doc do something. I've already scheduled a few acupuncture appointments for that day and told DH to be ready for some late-term sexy time.

  • Yes, it has gotten much tougher to have an induction these days.  With my first two DD's I was induced during my 38th week for their size and had great experiences.  During this pregnancy I moved to a new state and a new doctors office.  My first appt with them I told them I was concerned about not having my family able to get here fast enough to watch my two DD's while I deliver their brother.  The first person I saw told me that first of all inductions are no longer done before 39 weeks and that they won't do them unless it's a medical reason (not childcare).  She also said that I probably wouldn't find anyone at any practice around here that would do it for me.  I kept seeing different doctors at the practice until I found one that was totally fine with it.  She did say she needed a reason to put down besides child care but by going through my chart she noted that I had a 4th degree tear with my first child and said that would work.  So, my official reason for the hospital is now "previous fourth degree tear" but I'm not really worried about that at all since my second DD didn't cause a tear at all.  I'm just happy that they agreed to schedule it for Tuesday and that my IL's are making the drive out the day before so they will be here and settled with my girls for the big day.

Mine were great too.  First one was 13 hours total but got the epi before any pain and was very happy.  Pushed for 3 hours and needed forceps to get her out but she was over 9 pounds already at 38 weeks.  Second time 10 hours total , again got the epi before any pain, and only 10 minutes to push her out on my own.
  • I'm being induced for medical reasons on Monday. My blood pressure has been elevated for the last couple of weeks and my ob is concerned.
  • We are being induced at 40 weeks 5 days... unless he comes on his own before then~
  • yes I am haveig a scheduled C because they don't let twins go past 38 weeks.  My induction which is now a c because of baby b's position will be 38 weeks 1 day
  • I was induced with DD because of pre-e and like you it went super well. My ob is part of a practic so enless I am induced I will not be guaranteed that she will be my doctor and my chances are 1 in 6 so not very likely. Some of the other obs are super old school and I actually really don't care for a couple of them. She said she has no problem inducing me as long as it's after 38 weeks so that's what I am doing. It's just a personal choice and I trust her and want her to be the one to deliver this LO
