3rd tri ?: when to start pumping?

Okay moms, so I went to a 2 hour breastfeeding class the other night as part of our prepared childbirth classes. The instructor said it's okay to start pumping at 4-6 weeks, at which point the baby will supposedly be more okay with going between breast and bottle.

When did you start pumping? Did it go okay?

Thanks Smile

Re: 3rd tri ?: when to start pumping?

  • I had to pump right away because of BFing issues and my milk not coming in right away.  Then I had to keep pumping because of a supply issue.  I took a break when things got established and then began again once a day to start builiding a freezer stash.  We introduced a bottle around 4 weeks and didn't have much trouble.  We cup fed before that when we needed to supplement to avoid nipple preference.

  • I started pumping @ 3 weeks. It went fine - although I was only getting 2oz between both breasts.
  • I've already pumped a bit, because I amso engorged, and the LC told me to pump a little off before a feeding to allow DS to latch on better.  So, by the time I pump an oz off each side before a few feedings a day, I already have enough to store in the freezer.

However, we will not be giving any bottles until around the 4-week mark.

  • I started pumping at 6 weeks.  I wanted to start building up a small stash in case I needed it.  I was getting about 2 - 3 oz at first, now I get up to 6 oz each time I pump.  Maddie will be going to day care, so I wanted to slowly introduce a bottle to her.  She took to it very well and switches from boob to bottle with no trouble at all.  I keep about 3 feedings in the fridge at all times and then freeze the rest.  The fridge milk is good for up to 7 days & the freezer is good for 30.
  • I started pumping on day 1.  You can always pump to build your supply between nursing and then freeze your extra milk.

  • I had to start pumping at 4days because he was rehospitalized for jaundice and I wasn't allowed to nurse so everything had to be measured. It wasn't bad. I tend to wake up once at night to pump to get a freezer stash, or extra milk for the day incase dad needs to do a few feedings
