Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

SUPER sad after nap????

Each afternoon DS wakes up so sad from his nap.  With his a.m. nap he never does this; afternoons it sounds like he's in physical pain almost.  Doesn't want to be picked up, though eventually he will (10 minutes sometimes).  Even after I pick him up, he's arching his back and cries unless we rock in the chair and I distract him w/ Sesame Street or something like that.

Anyone else have this happen?  How do you handle it?

TIA-

Re: SUPER sad after nap????

  • I honestly almost posted this 1000x but never have. DS is down to one nap at 1:30-4:30 and he always wakes up crying and nothing consoles him for 10 or so minutes....

When he was taking two naps, he always woke up from the first nap in a great mood and the second nap he was in the inconsolable mood. It has to do with sleeping later in the day....

  • Thank you for responding - none of my RL friends have kids who do this.  How long did your DS do this for (age-wise)?

  • I know! I asked a couple other moms and they haven't experienced this either!!!

He's still doing it :-( He's 14 months. We moved him from two naps down to one when he was about 12 months. He gets tons of sleep... about 15 hours a day so I highly doubt it's that he's overtired or anything like that. I have just grown to accept it, unfortunately. When he wakes up I rock with him and sing to him.. sometimes he just lays there and cries and other times he pushes away from me like he wants to get down, so I let him down. I just let him get it out.... I have no idea how else to deal with it, ya know???

  • DD just started doing this!!!  She did it yesterday and today too.  Just woke up crying and would not stop no matter what I did.  She just wanted me to hold her and then she didn't and then she did.  It was for at least 10 mins before she was ready to play and have fun again.  I dont' get it but it looks like at least I'm not alone!
  • DD does this occasionally after a nap (she takes one afternoon nap).  It's almost like she's not ready to wake up, so she's still cranky and disoriented, but is "too awake" to go back to sleep.  We'll usually just sit with her in the room and rock her, or bring her downstairs and give her something to drink.  It passes in about 10 minutes, depending on how soon we can distract her with something.

  • DD has recently started this, but it is all times that she wakes up, not just naps. She cries and we have to hold her for a while. She used to wake up so happy and ready, but now, she seems so sad. Maybe they are having good dreams.
  • I have no idea if this is true or not, but this happened to me and one of my friends gave me this advice. She said it can be because when they wakeup from their afternoon nap, they can have low blood sugar and could have a headache. She said that is what her pedi told her was going on with her little girl. She suggested giving her some juice or snack as soon as she gets up and it will calm them down a lot sooner. I am not sure if her reason is correct, but my dd would be miserable for 30 minutes after her 2nd nap, now we do juice and a cuddle right away and she is fine.

  • Oooh, interesting.  I'll have to start trying this - anything is worth a shot!

  • DS does this exact same thing after his afternoon nap. We usually have to hang out in the glider for a good 10 min with me singing songs to him.  And then all hell breaks loose again when I attempt to change his diaper.  We usually cuddle on the couch with his Cheerios and diluted juice for a few minutes, and then he's off and running for the afternoon.
  • my dd woke up crying from her nap every single day (crying for 10-15 minutes + so grouchy) until just last week! i thought she would never grow out of it but she did! now she will wake up, jump off the bed and walk down the stairs in a pretty good mood. so don't worry there is hope =)

Ohhhhh, thanks!! That is great advice. It totally makes sense because he's crying like he's in some sort of discomfort....I will come in his room with snack and drink!!
