I'm pretty sure I'm doing this for #2. I was wondering if there were any tips/tricks I should know about before taking on the endeavor. Any advice would be much appreciated!
I wanted to but never found the right material for sheets. So I ended up making a crib skirt and buying sheets that I liked at Crate and Barrell. And then my kid decided he hated his crib and had never really slept in it.
My mom made a quilt, bedskirt, bumper and window treatments. We bought solid color fitted sheets.
Instead of making a bumper from scratch she took a solid minky dot bumper from Carter's and sewed a strip of quilt squares to the outside to coordinate with the quilt. Apparently it was a bigger PITA than making the bumper from scratch.
I did it for Kirsten, and I'll do it again for Audrey. I really loved the process, but then again, I love to sew!
With Kirsten's set, I designed my quilt first, then once I found fabrics I liked, I tweaked it again. From there, I made a bumper to coordinate (I used a bumper padding set from JoAnn Fabrics), a fitted sheet, and a bed skirt.
One thing I know for sure I'm doing differently this time is the bumper. I was ok with the first one I made, but this time I'm on the lookout for a new filler. I ran into problems when the bumper needed to be washed. It lasted fine, I just want to use something different. I'll be happy to pass along that info when I get it. I'm hunting down a lead this weekend. . . Also, I made my own ties out of fabric I used in the quilt and turning them right side out drove me nuts (that process always does.) so this time I'll be using grosgrain ribbon.

I have made parts of bedding sets...most recently for my 10 month old nephew when he was born. I was actually planning on doing this for my own LO as until yesterday I couldn't find any bedding we agreed on and it would have been cheaper to make my own with everything I was looking for. If you know how to sew, its all fairly easy (including the bed sheet, but those are typically cheaper to just buy solid colored ones already made). For my nephew I made a quilt that has a printed fabric panel on one side that was quilted around some of the shapes, and then I backed it with flannel backed satin and added a matching satin ruffle around the outside. The trick I used with the ruffle was to buy satin blanket binding and gather it. Saved myself all kinds of time by doing it this way (especially since it came in almost all the same colors as the satin). He loves it since its sooo soft. HTH
I did! I made a basic box pleat skirt, used a breathable bumper (only one I would have used) and plain sheets. I also made a toddler quilt, but that was mostly just for nursery pictures You know where to find me if you have more questions....

*I* didn't, but I picked out fabrics and had a seamstress make the blanket and crib skirt. I didn't bother with sheets b/c I could just buy solids for $10 - $20, and I didn't want everything to be too matchy-matchy. (I don't think we'll use the blanket either until she's older, but it's nice to have).
I don't have any real tips; I just chose fabric that was obviously able to be thrown in the wash and didn't require ironing.
