Northern California Babies

Try to wake baby?

I feed Charlie every 2-3 hours during the day. It's 2:30 now and I haven't fed him since 9:30. DH and I have been trying to wake him up since 1:15 and he will not wake up. It's been over 5 hours since he's eaten. Should we continue to try to wake him or just wait until he wakes up? I feel bad not feeding him but I cannot for the life of me wake this kid up!

Re: Try to wake baby?

  • I would wake him up especially because he is so young.

take off his clothes and diaper

wipe him with a cold wash cloth

  • I would wake him...newborns are so so so sleepy and they often don't wake up to eat even though they need to.

Try a cool washcloth...or taking off his clothes...change the diaper..

  • I checked his diaper 3 times. This normally wakes him up and makes him mad. :) DH is now taking off his clothes. I'm not going to take off his diaper b/c we'll probably get peed on. :) Thanks for confirming what I was thinking: keep trying to wake him up.

  • Yep, keep trying. Aside from needing to eat in general, sleeping too long during the day can cause him to swap his days and nights. (tons of fun for mom & dad.)
  • Ditto the undressing and the cool washcloth. It would particularly bother him if I wiped the bottoms of his feet!

I had the hardest time keeping DS up long enough to feed when he was that young. GL!

  • If you can't wake him soon I would call the pediatrician very soon -- sleeping too long and being unable to wake a newborn are not good things.  I'm sorry!  Hope he wakes quickly!

I agree and would call just for peace of mind before they close for the day.

  • After we took off his clothes he woke up and I was able to feed him. Its good to know I should be concerned if he kept sleeping (I didn't know it was something to be concerned about). I'll keep an eye on him.
