DD is almost 6 months and she wakes to eat 1-2 times a night. I have no problem feeding her during the night. But, when she wakes up to eat, she's up for 1-2 hours (usually closer to 2). It takes a good hour to get her to fall asleep and get into a deep enough sleep to be able to put her in bed. Naps are miserable as well. She won't sleep more than 20-30 minutes (on a good day) at a time in her crib. Then she's cranky shortly after because she didn't sleep long enough. So, basically I want something that will help with falling asleep & staying asleep in her crib. We started trying No Cry Sleep Solution a while back with very little imporvement. Thanks!
Re: Need a sleep book recommendation
I'm in the process of trying NCSS. I'm making the sleep logs now. I also bought NC Nap Solution, which I haven't started reading yet. I have the same problem as you w/naps.
I heard Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child has some good tips. It does mention CIO, but I understand it just lists it as one option, not the only option.

Solve Your Child's Sleep Problem by Richard Ferber
he is the head of the national pediatric sleep disorder center and teaches at harvard med. he is very misunderstood on the bump. a lot of his book isn't just about "CIO" but explains many different facets of sleep. it has a lot of things in there that you can also use with older kids. and he has a section on there for babies who need a lot of night feedings. your LO is old enough to do it. we just started today, and he's doing better than i expected.
Ditto the recommendations for SleepEasy Solution. We saw a difference overnight with our LO. Naps took a bit longer, but we started over Christmas and today, for example, here was our nap schedule:
nap one - no crying, slept 2 hours
nap two - cried for 22 minutes (with checkins), slept for 45 minutes
nap three - no crying, slept for 1 hour
This is putting DD down drowsy but awake, no paci. Before we were lucky if a nap lasted 45 minutes and we usually spent up to an hour trying to get her into the crib with all the fussing.
Good luck to you, and congrats on taking charge of helping you baby learn good sleep habits!
NCSS is great in theory, but the author even admits it could take up to 8 weeks. i really don't want to wait that long.
HSHHC is really long, but has some helpful information. i use his 2 hour awake rule.
