my gym is a hole, but my contract expires at the end of the month so i'm OUT of there! i'm looking at new ones and want to know what other people are paying. (if you feel comfortable sharing. not trying to pry) i know it will be more expensive in the city (boo) but i'm trying to get a general idea.
does your membership include child care or do you pay extra for that?
thanks!
Re: if you have a gym membership come in!!!
My gym doesn't have child care but it's about 30 secs from my house so that's huge to me. I pay $25/mo and it's 24 hours/365 days which is nice with my work schedule, since I work odd hours and holidays. I need convenience more than anything, so close to my house is really the big selling point.
My husband goes to Bally's, which I belonged to for 3 years and hated, but he has a lifetime membership and they have childcare for $1.?
in the city i was very loyal equinox member - it was hella expensive but i LOVED it. it was approx $200/month included childcare, spa, classes, everything.
But I think an average/more reasonable gym costs 50-100 bucks/month.
Go to xsport! I love it there. You can go to any gym they have, no matter which one you signed up at (and unlike Bally's, that's not dependent on how much you pay per month/level of membership).
They are offering really great deals right now, much cheaper than what I originally signed up with. I had a 15 month contract (paid for 12 months, got 3 free) at first, and after that I negotiated a better rate to renew, based on what the gym was offering at the time.
I really like the machines. Child care is not extra, and I've had great experiences with the attendants. The toys are pretty good, and while on the cardio machines, one of the channels is a live feed from the childcare room, so you can watch what's going on. Of course you can't do this while on the weight machines.
I have a trainer there too, who I adore.
I mostly go to the one on Ashland (by Belmont/Lincoln/Ashland) but I also go to the new one by the Target at Elston/Logan
We recently bought a home gym so we discontinuted our membership.
We were with Bally's for years and it was $60/month for both me and DH. It included childcare, several classes and use of the equipment.
When we had DS their childcare facilities were..um...scary. They were horrible. So we joined Lifetime Fitness. This is the gym of gyms. I mean, their childcare centers were beautiful, clean.. they even had batting cages for kids. It was so clean and organized. Not to mention the gym itself was perfect.I told DH it's like Globogym on Dodgeball. We paid $100/month for both of us.. totally worth the $40 hike but all my friends said I was nuts for paying that much for a membership. But it was worth every penny!
$100/year for the family. Including childcare. It's a county run rec center, and DH works for the county. Normal price is $200/year.
I am lucky, it seems!
Our gym is $42 a person, per a month. It includes classes, one training session with a PT a month (i think) and they have childcare, but I *think* it's $2 an hour or something?
DH is staying until his contract expires in the Spring, I left when I was preg. and am using 3 free months I had from when I quit. I'm joining a hole in the wall in the Spring, if I don't get pregnant. HTH
Lifetime is great, but I don't think there's any in the city...only the burbs around here.

hmmm.... i was going to go w/LPAC b/c it's right by our house, but i'll look into that one too. i definitely like the idea that i can watch timmy via tv. that is great.
which is why i'm leaving.... not to mention it's gross in there.
that childcare channel is an awesome idea!
doesn't that irritate you? the ILs go and it is sooo nice! not to mention i bet they could add us to their plan. lol. everytime i drive by one in the burbs they have an outdoor pool and i swoon.
ours has an outdoor pool and a waterslide... and they open a bar for "singles" on certain nights, lol.....
Yes! Since my DH works in Arlington Heights, for the village, we could get such a discount. And my mom has actually gone there to the "spa" to get a massage and said it was great! It's like a one stop shop. And I've used the restroom while buying a gift certificate and it is SO nice. The locker room/shower/bathroom area is so peaceful!
We're re-listing our condo in February and are looking at houses mainly in the south Palatine area, so I'm hoping to join there. I don't currently have a plan at xsport, just month to month so I won't have to get out of anything.
I was going to suggest Lifetime, it is a bummer they aren't near you. I love it there. We pay 55 a month for myself and childcare for DS. I also really like the Spa they have there. I can actually get my hair done and not have to worry about who is going to watch DS. It is by far the cleanest nicest gym in my area and it is the same price if not cheaper than the others.
~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

WHOA! i just called the gym by me and it will be $160 a month for timmy and i. no dh. yikes. i mean it was expensive when i was in nyc but i thought it would be a bit better here.
this sucks b/c i really wanted a gym i could walk to and our Y and xsport are driving distance. boo.
Oh yeah, LPAC is expensive. My DH doesn't belong there, but sometimes pays just to use the climbing wall and I think what they charge for that is high too. It's ridiculous.

My daughter just joined a gym 5 minutes from our house. It's $20/month for unlimited access and unlimited tanning (which she finds disgusting and won't use). She can also bring a guest (for free) every time she goes, if she wants ( I went with her tonight). She had to commit to a year and there's a $59 fee if she decides to cancel before then, but she can always "freeze" the membership if something comes up.
ETA: I'm pretty sure this gym doesn't have child care.
52/month. no child care, classes cost extra
i live 5 mins from the gym so i pay for convenience. i could go a few other places cheaper w/ more options (childcare, classes included, etc) but they are further away. the gym is for me and one of the few things i do exclusively for me so DH takes care of the girls while i do my thing. works out great and i love my gym!
