Do any of you use a humidifier (for yourself or baby)? It has been so dry here, and because of the low temps (-12 with wind chill today) our heater has been running a lot. My skin is so tight and dry, despite the fact that I lather on the lubriderm a couple of times a day, and I can feel the dryness in the air when I breathe.
Would a humidifier help us? Are there any out there that aren't completely obtrusive and loudly obnoxious?
Re: humidifier?
We have one for our bedroom and one for Eli's. Neither of them make much noise, but you can hear the steam/vapor coming out. I doesn't bother me at all though and I'm a pretty light sleeper. Ours is a Vicks warm steam and Eli's is a Pooh cool mist humidifier.
I notice a difference. I don't wake up with as many headaches and my sinuses don't feel as dry. Plus I don't get shocked when I touch the light switches as much!
We have a Crane cool mist humidifier in James room (the frog - got it at target) not noisy at all!
We have this one in Olivia's room and it seems to help her a lot. We used one when we lived in Chicago and they help so much. I need to get one for our bedroom.
We have a small Crane humidifier in Haley's room (link). We run it every night because if we don't, her nose gets too dry and sometimes bleeds a little.
We have this humidifier in our living room and one in our bedroom. On high, it's a little loud, but on low or medium, it's just a little extra white noise. It's definitely helped DH and I out with the dryness. We can both tell a difference when we don't run ours at night.
We have that same one, and while it seems to help, I *hate* cleaning it. The heating element gets very scaly and it's virtually impossible to get it off. If I had to do it over, I'd get a cool mist one.
I'm not sure why, but my GP recommended a cool mist over a regular humidifier. I used to get sinus infections several times every winter. Since getting the humidifier I think I've had two. My sinuses still get pretty dry in the winter so I get nosebleeds (ugh) but not as bad as I used to.
We only use the humidifier in the bedroom but I'd love to have a whole-house one. I just imagine the huge chest-like ones of the olden days but haven't looked into more modern options.
I should add...
My ILs have a whole-house humidifier that they love. We're considering having my FIL install one at our house.
We've discussed this as well. I think if/when we move, we'll try to have a whole house humidifier installed before we move in!
We have a Holmes one. I wish I would have gotten a more expensive one but it definitely made a difference. I can't remember the reasoning but I feel like we got a cool mist based on several recommendations.
ETA: More expensive should probably say one that does a larger area. We have an open living/dinning/kitchen space and we could probably benefit from a larger capacity tank.
Thanks for all of your responses! I am definitely going to look into getting a cool mist one this weekend. I don't know why we didn't have one before!
And Jac, I agree with you that a little bit of white noise might help drown out DH's snoring. Sounds like a good plan to me!
I just bought one because our air is so dry and it was irritating a cough I had last month. I bought this one from Bed Bath & Beyond (with a coupon of course):

I love it. I can only hear it if I actively try to listen for it. Sometimes it makes soft gurgling noises that I actually find soothing
p.s. you are cutest pregnant woman I have ever seen. love your hair and outfit!
Ooh, great idea to go to BBB with a coupon. For some reason, I was thinking I would go to Target, but this makes much more sense.
Thanks for your sweet compliment, and for your comment on my blog too! I had just gotten my hair done in those pics from the baby shower, and I always feel like it's a little brighter the first few days, even though I just ask for the usual.
The doctors told us to use a cool mist FWIW.
We have a cool mist and right now in A's room we just have a flat pan of water set up to help. I don't know how much that helps but the entire bucket was dry when I went up there to change the water. (yeah.)
The humidifiers def help!
My grandma sets pots of water on her register vents, it works. Ours are in the ceiling and a pot of water on the floor with a toddler is a disaster in the works.
