What kind of car do you drive?

2 door, Sedan or SUV?

My 4 door has BARELY enough room for little G and I when we drive to San Diego for the weekend.  Wondering how big your car is and if you think you have enough space for the entire family comfortably.

Re: What kind of car do you drive?

  • We've got 2 cars - a Honda CR-V (small SUV) and a Honda Civic.  We just use the CR-V when traveling with Laney as we only have one car seat right now and it's in the CR-V.  BUT - I can definitely see where space will be an issue in the Civic.  We drove down to my Dad's for Christmas and the back of the CR-V (and part of the rear seat) was full!

  • I drive a Honda Element.  I guess you would call it a four door, but it has those crazy "clam-shell" doors.  When LO is bigger, I think that I will love it, but while he is so little, I HATE it.  I looked into trading it in, but it just didn't make sense, financially, to do so, so I am sucking it up!  (And driving my DH's car is not a better option--his is an FJ Cruiser.  How we ended up with such similar vehicles is beyond me!)

We are one and done, so yes, I think that both of our cars will be okay for family trips.  Though, for longer trips, or when the dog comes along, we may need to throw the Thule car-top-carrier on to ensure comfort.

  • We have one sedan(DH works from home and his European self still isn't super fond of driving), and it works fine.
  • I had a Honda Accord but by the time I was in my 3rd Tri - it had 120K miles on it and was starting to have its problems.  So I found a Passat wagon (used demo) that I love!  The trunk is super big and very useful, stroller, bags, boxes  ... everything fits in it!  DH has a 4dr pick-up.

  • We have a Toyota 4 Runner and a minivan which has tons of space except that until her car seat gets turned around the passenger front seat has to be pretty far forward. It is the nicer car and the one that we would prefer to take on trips but you do feel a little cramped in that seat
  • I have a Subaru Outback Sport wagon. It was supposed to be the family travel car because it has the rack on top for skis, bike or a Thule box. The kicker is that the recommended location for the car seat is either behind the passenger or driver's seat, not the middle. So I have pull the passenger's seat way up and have DH drive since he has long legs. I'm not short, either so it makes for a long trip. And we can't take another passenger unless they're short. So it's pretty much useless for it's intended purpose.

My friend has a new Outback and it seems a lot roomier.

DH has a Acura which is roomier but we can't take skis or extensive amount of cargo.

My car has about 90k on it so I'll be in a market for another one in the next year or so.

  • I drive a toyota corolla for now! Probably upgrade to crossover next yr. My car is paid off so not in a big hurry.

  • I have a 4 door sedan and DH has a 2 door that we both brought with us when we got married. We also have a dodge truck that we bought from his work (fleet vehicle) for a song. All of our vehicles are paid for so we are going to keep them for a little bit longer. DH also has a motorcycle.

  • Both DH and I drive 4 door sedans.

    Me: 2007 Saturn Aura XE

DH: 2010 VW Jetta SE (new lease - picked it up last Sat.)

Mine has 1.5 years left in payments.  We want a SUV after (in 3 years).

  • I traded in my 4-door sedan for a Dodge Journey crossover just before LO was born. Just like you are thinking I knew eventually I would need enough room for travel with DH and Baby. I have to say, I love, love, love my car. It's the first car I have owned that I look forward to driving. Not to mention it has all the cool bells and whistels for LO.

HEy if any one is interested in a dodge, jeep, or chrystler let me know because my FIL worked for Chrystler and can get a friends and family discount.

  • We have one sedan - the "American Classic".

It's a 99 Pontiac Grand Am. I am not especially fond of it but it does have enough room. We're hoping it lasts until DH is done with training. It might - we have 2.5 years left and we hardly ever drive it. There is no sense in getting a new car when you park on the street in the city. We have been run into 5 separate times since we have been here 2.5 years (we were parked and not in the car each time)!! Once was by a cable car/truck mock-up.

  • We have a four door sedan and grand caravan. our joke is that if we have any more children we're going to need a bus. lol. we love the grand caravan and want to eventually trade the sedan in for another minivan (or bus lol)
  • I drive a gold 2000 Honda Odyssey with an OBX sticker on it, a Gravedigger Monster Truck license plate holder and a Presidental Physical Education Winner bumper sticker. LOL. I am such a soccer mom.

    I love my mini-van.

  • We have a 2007 Honda Pilot and a 2003 Honda Accord.  Both are nice and roomy.  We only have one car seat base, so that's in the Pilot.

Oh yea, we also still have my old POS 1994 Toyota Paseo.  Sits on the streets to bring everyone's home values down!  It's the "airport" car and actually gets better gas mileage than the other two.

  • I drive a 2003 Nissan Altima 4 door.  It is more than adequate for day-to-day, even with DD, but it can't handle everything we need for longer trips.

DH drives a 2009 Mazda 5.  It is like a mini-minivan.  It has the sliding doors in the rear, and a third row of seats that we usually fold down because otherwise there is something like 4 cubic feet of cargo space.  It has a manual transmission, which is something we really wanted.  It does not have a ton of leg room, so on trips DD goes behind DH (his legs are shorter than mine).   We just bought it in November, and it worked out well during all of the family visits over the holidays.

His previous car was a 1997 Cavalier, so we were starting to think about replacing it even before I got pg.  We decied to wait and see if we really needed something bigger once the baby arrived.  We did.  The Cav had less room than the Altima, plus the a/c didn't work anymore and he refused to fix it since that cost more than the blue book value of the car!

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.

This is us EXACTLY Kandie!!  With 5 children now (including Priya) our Grand Caravan is FULL!! Any more kids and we'll have to start taking both vehicles or buy one of those full sized vans.  For our wedding we rented a 15-passenger van instead of a limo because we went on a road trip the next day and I loved, loved, loved it.  Although I don't have plans on filling it up Smile

  • I drive a Honda Pilot.  When my car got totaled a few months before I conceived DD, I went ahead and got the "family" car.  It has worked great for us.  Easily holds the kids and all our gear and there is the 3rd row seat that is a tight squeeze for an adult but still functional for an adult.  And 3rd row curtain airbags which was important to me.  DH has an old Lexus SUV and there is enough room if we aren't taking much or buying much.  Let's just say we've learned it's NOT the car to take to Costco.

  • I drive a 2008 Toyota Highlander.  I had to trade in my sporty 2 seat convertible to get it, which was a sad day, but obviously the coming baby meant a change was necessary.  I actually love it.  It has a third row that we keep folded down almost all of the time, meaning there is a lot of room in the back to cart a stroller, pack and play, whatever.

DH has a 2003 BMW 540.  We all fit in it, but the the gigantic Recaro car seat behind me (the passenger), I have to keep the seat so far forward that it would not be a good candidate for a road trip.

  • Honda Pilot with optional 3rd row seating. i love the SUV.

What convertible? DH and I are holding onto our Mazda Miata which is 15 years old with less than 50k miles on it. We will probably try to sell it this summer and convert that and our Audi into a four door convertible.

Our main car is a Volvo XC. I used to primarily drive the sporty convertible so the change was huge. It is amazing I have not backed into someone or something. It is great with a baby though. Roomy trunk and two people can fit in the back with a carseat.

It was an Mercedes SLK 32 AMG that I had for a little less than 4 years.  I loved that little car.  My financial situation has changed too (I was not married when I got the car and had much lower expenses, and on top of that DH worked in subprime mortgage, and when we got married we bought a historic house that depended on both of our incomes for the mortgage and which turned out to be a money pit).*  But I hope that someday I'll able to afford another car like that, again.  Sad  We plan to have another child, so it won't be anytime soon!

Luckily, I haven't had any major scrapes in the Highlander, although I did barely scrape the side of a pick up truck once.  But definitely, it was a huge adjustment.

I think a four door convertible would be fun!  We might go that route someday, or at least get one with a back seat!
