umm not to sound mean- but try to enjoy it. this phase will soon be over and then they never sit still and you are lucky to even get a hug during the day. I know it can be trying with a child that tends to be clingy.
Lovies can be anything- a blanket- a stuffed animal- some kids even will take to a burp cloth that they carry around. Its not something you can force on your kid. it either happens or it doesn't.
Paige never liked a lovey. I gave her various toys but none stuck. Now she has some she sleeps with in bed but nothing she has to have.
Sarah is very attached to a monkey toy I got for christmas from TCP last year. This year I got her the penguin and he also is allowed in her bed. She carries them both around. No other loveys allowed.
We bought DD a teddy bear for her 1st bday. It was the softest stuffed animal at toys r us at the time and only cost like $4. She drags it all over the house and sleeps with it. But a toy isn't going to replace you.
Of course I DO NOT want a toy or blanket to replace me...that is just silly and maybe I should've gone into more detail.
This post was meant to be "lighthearted" just hoping for some suggestions of "loveys" that have been successful for your LOs. My daughter gets lots of love all day (and night) from me.. hugs, kisses, rocking, holding, she has not and will not CIO... that is a piece of our story...just looking for ideas!
I use a lovey with my one twin. She is a touchy child (was also as a baby) and using a lovey with her has worked wonders because she has major seperation anxiety from me as I am SAHM and my DH is on the road for work (he is military) so she is almost always with me every waking moment of her day. Her lovey is a small blanket with a bear head attached to it. She can carry it around with her throughout the day and use it when she gets upset and cannot be with me (like when I am cooking in the kitchen and I don't want her near the stove).
Since she took to this so well, I bought 3 more of them so I can change them out and wash them regularly. I go through about 3 of them a week, having the 4th one as a back up in case 1 gets dropped in the dog water bowl or something like that. If you let them get too smelly, the child will attach to the the smell of the item and then you can never clean them because when you do clean them they don't like them because it is missing the smell they are use to.

Same as regenab we have a bear head with a blanket attached for Parker. She LOVES Mr. Friend (as we fondly refer to him). We sort of pushed in on her because of some experiences during her infancy which were out of our control. It's gone from being her security at night, to putting a diaper on him like mommy does to her little sister and everything in between.
It's really been a positive experience for us as a family, so much so, that Santa brought Rowan her own little friend this Christmas. It's been really cute to see Parker hand Rowan her friend when she's fussing.

He has been really attached to it since he was three months. His grandma got it from Toys R Us. She got him a lamb, too, for Christmas.
