Bringing your own gown?

I just came across an article on this on BabyCenter and googled to see what they were talking about.  Of course, the ones you can buy are so much cuter then the ones in the hospital!

Anyone planning on bringing your own gown to the hospital for the birth?

  • There was a thread last nite on this....

but to answer your question...absolutely not;  its a waste.  Why mess up your own clothes/have to wash them (or buy something youre just going to toss) when you can use the hospital gowns.  I stayed in hosp gowns for a few days w/DD (had a csect/in hosp for 5 days);  it was easier to BF and I could change as many times as I wanted.  Its not a fashion show....its birth

I wasn't on last night so I missed it.  I'll go look - thanks!

  • I did plan on bringing pants and a robe for after the baby is born because I think it will make me feel much better.  Sounds like that's what most of you are doing as well.

  • If you do, make sure it's a nursing gown.  I brought all these cute nighties to the hospital but never wore a one.  My ta-tas were out more than they were in and the hospital gowns (although butt-ugly) were much more comfy and easy to use.
  • To get it full of birth fluids, etc.? No - not worth wasting the money. I'll use the stylish hospital gowns. Health providers, DH & doula will be the only ones to see me till LO is born and then I'll have something I can change into later - unless the hospital gowns grow on me.

  • I have one but not for the birth.  I'm using it for after my shower when I am in PP room.  With DD1 I used the hospital gown in recovery and I hated it mainly because it was too big and huge.  I would not birth in my personal gown though.  One of my friends that ordered one used it while she was at home PP as well.

When I was in the bed I would pull the gown up around my waist so that I was sitting on the "puppy pad" (because thats what they look like lol) in the event that I had a leak.

  • I have a nursing gown and one pair of nursing pjs so far that I plan on bringing to the hospital. They wont be put on, however, until the little lady is actually here and I've taken a shower :)
  • Yes I'm bringing one for after the birth, but not during, no reason to get all that grossness on my own clothes!

  • No way... what a waste of money.  You really won't care what you are wearing when you deliver and why get your own clothes messy?
  • No, it's a waste, imo. You're going to sweat and get blood/placenta on it. Why would you spend money on something that you're just going to throw away? Especially when the hospital gives you one for free?

I bought a robe that I plan on wearing over top of the gown after the baby is born.

I don't wear gowns, so I'm not buying one. I wore what they put me in when I got to L&D, and then after DD was born and I got up (about an hour after delivery), I put on my pajama pants and favorite long sleeved Tshirt. I felt awesome in my own clothes!

I did this. I just was not comfortable walking around or receiving visitor in a gown all day. So i brought so comfy pj pants and a t shirt. It made me fell less frumpy too.
