Success after IF

S/O: Singleton moms- When did you stop working?

I am exhausted already.  I wanted to work until the last minute but I dont think I can do it!  Maybe I am being weak but work is kicking my butt and I can only imagine how I am going to feel in another month.

So...how long did you work?  Did the type of work you do impact that?

Re: S/O: Singleton moms- When did you stop working?

  • Everyone is different, but I am still working at a desk/managerial job.  I plan to work to the last possible point.  I am tired at night, though.

  • I was a retail buyer and manager... My OB made me stop working 6 days and pulled me out of work at 39 weeks. I am glad I was cause I needed to do last minute things and doctor's appts etc. DS was born on his due date.

  • I worked from home and was on bedrest, so I can't really help but i was burning DVD's and mailing them out the morning I went in to get induced (at 5am!) lol, I like to say I was dedicated to the end :)
Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I worked until I was 39 weeks.  I gave birth two days after my due date, so I was home "relaxing" for 9 days.

  • Technically, I worked until the end. That said, I took several sick days/half sick days b/c I had so many to use. The last 3 weeks I probably worked 3.5 days per week.

  • I was written out of work at 36 weeks due to high blood pressure.  I was still feeling ok enough to work, though.

  • I work in a school and we got out for summer break when I was just over 37 weeks. I probably could have worked longer, but I was getting quite uncomfortable and swollen. And I wasn't sleeping very well, so getting up to go to work was hard. Luckily I had that time off because DD came 10 days early!

  • I worked until I had her.  Well, I worked on Friday, had her Sunday morning.  I wanted as much time as possible after I had her...but I remember saying that if I didn't have her by my due date I was not going back to work after that.  Not sure if I would have followed through or not.

I was exhausted and it was summer so I was so swollen.....my legs looked like tree trunks and my size 7.5 feet were at least 10s (I only had one pair of size 10 flip flops that didn't totally cut into my feet at the end). I work a "desk" job BUT.....I spend at least 60% of my time in meetings at other sites so there is tons of getting in and out of my car, walking up stairs in parking garages, etc-- that was so hard at the end.  But I made it and I got to spend 13.5 weeks with her after I had her....hang in there!!

ETA: I had her 3 days early, so I almost made it the whole way.

This, except it was 34 weeks. DS then came within the week! BTW, I was planning to work until 36 weeks.

  • I worked at my desk job until 39w5d - it was a Wednesday. I had some vacation time to use up that I couldn't use after the baby was born, so I took a few extra days off. DS was born the following Sunday (2 days late), so it worked out really well! I loved having those few extra days to relax, get organized and go to doc appts.

  • I stopped working about 4 months before I got pregnant :)

Seriously though... with #1 I went out of school/work around 36 weeks (right before the winter holidays - she was born at the end of January.  It seemed silly to go back for just a few weeks in between, so I didn't)

With #2 I had to take a leave of absence from work at 28 weeks due to his medical issues.

With #3 I left work to SAH full time before I got pregnant.

So... I've never "worked till the last minute" and unless a woman has the worlds easiest, most enjoyable, stress free job in the world I have no idea why she would :)  (Of course I know it's not an option for some... I just mean if you can afford to go out early I say do it!! Use that time to relax and enjoy the last bit of time before the LO comes and changes everything :)

  • i worked until my due date, a friday.   i decided just 2 days before that that would be my last day (friday).  i went into labor the following monday night.

  • worked up until 1 week before I delivered, and I was working on my feet all day.  I did, however go down to 4 days/wk instead of 5 at 36 weeks and that made a huge difference, IMO.  like pp said, everyone is different. some get stir crazy and others enjoy the time off before LO arrives. are you able to do some work from home? maybe you could start doing a combination of work from home & office...though i know sometimes you have to go in no matter what
  • With DS #1......I was taken out of work at 36weeks and he was born at 38w5d.

With DS#2.....I was taken out of work at 37w and he was born at 37w5d.

I'm a middle school teacher and was miserable.......I'm proud I made it that far each time :)

  • I worked up until the day I went into labor.  I had no idea I was going to go into labor that night, but my water broke.  And no looking back I can say how crappy I felt that day and was having contractions.

My plan was to work up until a few days before my due date.  I am glad I did work up until that day, because I had more time off after baby came.

  • My plan was to work until I had the baby, which ended up being two days before my EDD.  I work in the software industry so I have a desk job, thankfully!

  • I worked a full day the Friday before - had my baby that Monday (at 39 weeks.)  I work mostly at a desk, on a computer - figured I'd be doing that at home too so might as well stay at work as long as possible and save all my leave for the other side.  Definitely recommend you do the same if you can - you will want to spend as much time as possible with your baby before heading back (IF you're heading back to work, that is!)
    Wheee!

  • I work in higher education, but at a desk for the most part. I would have had a lot of in-state travel around 34-38 weeks, which I did not do. But I worked in my office up to 40w1d. I stopped then and went into labor at 40w5d. I wanted all of my FMLA leave after the birth, so I kept working.

  • I worked until 35 weeks but I wish I had stopped at 30 or 31 weeks.  It was hot in Aug/September and it didn't help me with other complications (pre-e and PUPPS).  I ended up having my son at 36 weeks so basically, I did work until nearly the end.
3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.

  • FWIW, I felt like you did at 31 weeks too.  But I made it another 10 weeks and I worked up until the hour I went to the hospital for my induction.  Hang in there, not every day will be so bad!
  • At 38 weeks I was aloud to work from home until I deliver with a Dr's note. I was getting so exhausted commuting on public transportation, and my hips were killing me. I work a desk job, but sitting there for hours on end and also walking around the office was difficult. Thank god I have an understanding OB.

  • I feel ya!  I'm a nurse and work 12 hr night shifts.  I used to prefer to do all 3 of my shifts in a row, but now, 2 is all I can manage and I pick the 3rd up later in the week.  I'm still planning on working until the week of my EDD unless my OB tells me differently or she comes earlier.
  • I worked until a week after my due date (dd was 11 days late)
  • Well, I worked the until 7pm on a Tues., came home, crampy after eating, and had DD the next morning.

She was a month early and I was going to restricted hours on the DAY SHE WAS BORN :(

I worked in retail and traveled my entire last 3 months of my pregnancy (1.5 car ride to another city each day, w/o traffic), so between my drive time and 8+ on my feet, the 4-5 days before I delivered I had started to swell (legs, feet).

I was working in my home store the night before and had planned on working more office related projects to prepare for going on leave.
