BF and starting solids

So I am curious, and DS's appointment isn't for a few weeks. If I start replacing one nursing session a day with rice cereal (made with EBM) will that hurt my supply? I am guessing it won't since he will still be nursing 4 times a day instead of 5... and it has to happen eventually. He really loves the cereal and so far I only give him about 1-2 tbs. after his feeding, but I'm going to continue to increase it for a full meal. I just need some mental reassurance I think!

Re: BF and starting solids

  • i think you supply would go down if you eliminated a nursing session. your body produces what your son takes. so, if you eliminate a session, your body won't produce as much.

but if you plan to replace a session with cereal, then it's moot anyway, right?

  • Yeah, I'm thinking I'll only produce what he wants so it shouldn't be a big deal.

  • I would pump right after you give the cereal to build up a freezer stash and maintain your milk supply.
  • i don't think you're supposed to replace an entire feeding with cereal, just offer it in addition to nursing. i've read to offer cereal when they're not hungry b/c they have a hard time actually eating it - as opposed to just playing with it - and get frustrated if they're hungry and can't ingest food. our pedi gave us a sample schedule. i'm worried about my supply decreasing too - which is why i'm also waiting until 6 months to start!
  • It's really best not to replace BM feedings with solids at this point. BM should be the primary source of nutrition until age 1, with solids just for practice. Your supply would be affected if you were to replace a nursing session with cereal. Offer the cereal to baby an hour after nursing, so baby gets the practice, but continues nursing as before. Or, you could skip the cereal part altogether and go straight to some mashed up banana or avocado! Have fun!
