Registering and looking for advice on what kind of bottles to register for my newborn...and if you use different bottles for the baby as he gets older too!
I registered for the smallest pack of each because you really dont know what the baby will like. We have been lucky DD has taken to both types of bottles we have given her (dr browns and soothie)
My breasts! They're not dishwasher safe but they're easy to pack around!
Charlotte has refused every bottle we've ever tried with her, but with Ava we used Playtex Drop Ins and Dr. Brown's. We used the Playtex Drop Ins at first, and she took them just fine--in fact a little too fine b/c she came to prefer the bottle over breastfeeding. I'm not sure it was "nipple confusion" that you always hear about, because she didn't have a latch problem, but I think she just preferred the faster flow of the bottle and not having to work as hard to get milk. Around 5 months she had developed reflux and was spitting up all the time, so we decided to give Dr. Brown's bottles a try and never looked back. They solved her spit up issues pretty much instantly!
My advice would be to register for 1-2 of several types of bottles (Dr. Brown's, Avent and Playtex are all really popular... and so are the regular old Evenflo and Gerber bottles that don't get much press anymore, but sometimes the old fashioned basic stuff works just fine). It really just depends. In our case, the Dr. Brown's bottles were great when Ava developed reflux but had that not happened, I would have been fine with the Playtex bottles and never would have switched. This is one of those things that there is no right answer to and there is really no "best" bottle b/c all babies are different (my two very different kids are proof of that!) and it is really what the baby prefers when it comes to this. I wouldn't register for a huge set of one kind b/c once you open them and use them, you won't be able to return them. If your baby doesn't like them, you'll be out of luck.
Also, no you don't need different bottles for when the baby gets older, just new nipples (they come in stage 1, 2, 3, etc.) but you can use the same bottles. After bottles you can go straight to sippy cups.
Ava Caroline 8.27.07 I Charlotte Grace 5.18.09 I Lila Katherine 1.20.11
Buy one of a few and don't open anything before the baby is born!!! I registered for and received a ton of Avent bottles because I used to like them when I worked in daycare, and of course she didn't take them. Or any others-- Playtex, Mam, Nuk, Evenflo, etc. We tried over ten different kinds before she decided she was okay with Dr. Brown's. We wasted a ton of money. So register, but never count on the baby necessarily liking what you like!

Are you going to BF? And if so will you be SAH or Working?
If you are going to BF and SAH you don't need that many bottles.... I have always given Noah bottles of BM every other day or so for one feeding to keep him used to them so we can go out, etc. I only have 3 bottles and that's plenty.
If you are going to FF or be working then you need more. Like ppl said it's kind of trial and error. We have Avent and he took right to it, never needed to try another. I think it's a good idea to just get/register for a 2/4 pack and then depending on what your LO prefers, then get more.
And ditto on the nipples... you don't need new bottles, just nipples that come in stages 1,2,3... Because I EBF I still use a #1 nipple for Noah when he does take a bottle so he still has to work for it and doesn't start to like a faster flow.

I have BF both my little ones and we have always used the Breastflow bottles by First Year (Target sells them). We LOVE them and both babies took to them well! We had Dr. Brown's but they are not wide mouth so I did not want to chance nipple confusion since I heard that it is best to have a wide nipple when breast feeding. Like pp's though, each baby is different and will take to bottles differently. Also, depending on your situation, you may not need many bottles. If you plan to BF and stay at home then you only need a couple, if you are BFing and working full time you will need a few, and you will need more if FFing. I have heard great things about the Playtex drop ins also. Good luck in your decision!
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!
Married to my BFF on 8.13.05 (after dating 5 years)!
We tried the drop-ins and Drew didn't like them very much but he loved Dr. Browns.
I have to share that I almost wrote "Dr. Franks" in this post--- which is not a kind of bottle, but instead, my favorite brand of Riesling. I would highly recommend that for everyone else!
The best bottle is the one that is best for your baby... so you don't really know that until after your LO arrives.
We used Dr. Browns and I really like them. We also used avent and he just didn't like those as much. But every kid is different. Like pp's said- buy a small # of bottles and if they don't work head to your local target, etc... to find different ones.
Oh, and you don't need level 2/3 nipples. B still takes a bottle on occasion and is using the nipples that came with the bottle.
we used drop-ins for awhile but we recently switched to Born Free glass bottles because the warmer at daycare was warping the drop-ins holder. We never had any issues with her refusing a certain brand of bottle.
Dr. Brown's. I agree to just open 1 pack just in-case... but it seems like those are widely accepted by babies. And I never switched nipple sizes either. And if you pump you can pump right into them with the Medela PISA. If you get them definitely get a dishwasher basket, maybe even 2 because bottle washing is pure evil. My DH and I still talk about how many bottles we had to wash because we have an old dishwasher and I was a weirdo about washing them in there until I got sick and tired of my hands being so dry and cracked (Mini vent over. )
Avents are awful. One of the babies I watch uses them and they always leak for me.
We tried Playtex ventaire, Born Free, and Avent. We ended up going with Avent, but he'll take Born Free also (we only have the one they gave us at BRU when we registered.)
I used the Playtex Vent-Aire with Ryleigh and she did fine with them, we did have some issues at first with the nipples, so I ended up using the classic Evenflo nipples in the Vent-aire bottle and they worked great! The vent-air bottles say you can only use "their" nipples but that is not true! But like everyone else said it's really going to depend on your baby. The last baby shower I went to I bought the mom 4-5 different bottles so that she would be able to try them all out beforehand.

We used mostly Avent and liked them just fine. My son wasn't picky at all. For gas issues I used Mylicon drops instead of experimenting with different bottles. We also used some Playtex Vent-Aires that we received at a shower. But Avent are nice and wide with just a few pieces and were the easiest to wash so they were my fave I never wanted any Dr. Brown's bottles because of all the freaking parts to wash. Yeah I am lazy
Re: RECOMMEND the best BOTTLE :)
i registered for these and we love them so far

Along the same lines, you might consider this dishwasher basket for them: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2969609

Luckily, both of my kids weren't picky and took right to Playtex drop-ins. I LOVE those bottles. So much easier!
Ditto Jenna. Logan wasn't picky and we used the drop-ins and they worked well.
