Breastfeeding

XP: Has anyone heard of this or dealt with it?

Lately DS has been vomiting a lot after nursing and I am concerned, I called the doc but she isn't in today (great!), the receptionist suggested I go to the walk-in clinic but I'd rather see my doc since the walk-in clinic usually takes 2 hours to even get in and you usually don't see a doctor, just a physician's assistant.

I did a little research and think it might be from "Overactive letdown," I really don't know but I might try what the website suggests to see if it helps.  Here is the link: https://www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/helpme_asklc_ans6.html

If you have heard of this or have dealt with it please offer your advice.  I hate to see DS not feeling well, I am in tears at the thought of having to take him to the doc because he is not feeling well.  TIA!

  • I remember around 6-7 weeks DS was having to gulp and my book said it's normal and he would get used to the speed and amount. He did, it took a few days but he caught up and learned to drink more quickly. Your supply will increase as your baby's appetite and weight increase so they need time to adjust to the speed and amount. He also vomited after feeding, I am actually just now getting used to not having to change my pants after feeding him. Sometimes I swore he puked everything he ate! And I read that it has to do with immature parts that don't hold everything down as well as they will as he grows. I wouldn't worry unless he is losing weight or is acting strange. Hopefully your Dr. will be in tomorrow so you can call and make sure.

  • Is he making burps when you burp him? This happened to DS and it was actually gas bubbles causing the milk to come back up! Once we started to burp him longer the problem was solved!

This.  Our LO vomited up a whole lotta milk once and it scared the crap out of me.  It was because he had a big bubble early on in the feed.  I was really careful to burp him after that and it never happened again. I hope he feels better soon!

  • It is definitely worth trying a few of the suggestions until you can get into the doctor. You can try hand expressing or pumping a bit to relieve if your breasts are engorged as that worsens the fast letdown. And definitely try burping him after a couple minutes of nursing. Around 6 weeks is when things got bad for us and she would get so mad when I'd make her stop to burp, but once she realized she felt better she wouldn't get so mad and eventually she learned to control the flow better through her sucking.
