I don't know that it does, unless they were being redundant - although I might be wrong. They told me I needed machine washable baby weight yarn, and wouldn't all acrylic yarn be machine washable?

Usually acrylic yarn is machine washable, but there are a lot of baby yarns that are made of natural fibers (I like alpaca) and some are mixes of acrylic and natural fibers so be sure to read the label.
baby weight or also named fingering yarn is NOT the same as sport weight yarn. It is thinner. To be knitted on size 3 needles or crochet hook size D3. Classified under fine and super-fine (1 and 2), as opposed to sport weight or light yarns (3). There is not a lot of fingering weight yarn avalable through retail stores, but i know of at least a couple - in Acrilic, that would be Bernat Baby Fingering yarn

OK, according to this, baby is the same as fingering or sport, so not very descriptive.
Sport is slightly lighter than DK. DK knits up at 5.5-6 st/in, sport at about 6 (fingering at 7 or 8).
