bfing moms I got bit and need some advice

Hannah bit me for the first time a few nights ago.  She was really fussy and kept latching on and pulling off and finally bit down.  As soon as she did it she pulled away like she knew she did something wrong and I gasped in pain.  She started crying right away and so I closed up my shirt and told her "no biting" in a firm voice.  At that point she was hysterical and I'm pretty sure she got the point.

My nip was bleeding but just a small amount.  I've been putting Lansinoh on it but every time she nurses it hurts so bad.  Is there anything else I should be doing to help the healing process?  How long does it take for a small gash like that to heal?

Thanks!

  • is there any way you can use a nipple sheild on that side until it heals?

my dr prescribed me a nipple compound when my nips were mangled due to alex- that stuff had me healing up within 24 hours!

  • Wow, she must have bit pretty hard.  Both my kids got teeth early (at about 5 mos) and I've been bitten (more like a nipped, not anywhere close to drawing blood) many times (usually at least once a day these days b/c N's top teeth are coming in).  Try putting a little breast milk on it and letting your nip air dry with no bra on around the house.

Sorry about the bite, sounds painful.

  • DD has bit hard enough to draw blood once -- and it healed within a few days.  But I have a milk blister that I've had since, oh...her 3 month shots (because she nursed ALL DAY afterwards) and that is far more annoying and painful.  I use a cream called green goop that I got from Jillian's Drawers.  It has calendula and olive oil in it and some other natural goodies.  Doesn't have to be washed off and is very soothing on my nips but hasn't done much to heal it.  DD is teething so I expect that the biting will continue off and on through this process.  I'm interested in making my own APNO a la Dr. Newman to see if that helps the blister but I actually doubt it will.  The blister has resolved itself a couple of times but when it comes back it comes right back and so I feel like I'm just prone to it now.  Which sucks -- especially since she tends to bite on that side if she does (I wonder if it just feels different to her, surely it must).

  • There is a compound cream you can use to cut healing time in 1/2, but I forget the name of it. Riley bit me a few times hard enough to break skin, twice enough to bleed. It took about a week for the bleeder to heal without the cream. i suggest some motrin of tylonol about 1/2 hour before a feed if he is in pain. It cuts down on them wanting to chomp on the nipple.
