Cloth Diapers: Ladies whats the low down...

I know you all get this alot, but whats the low down on cloth diapers. I'm pg with my first and I don't know one person who as used cloth.

So are they cost effective and what is the start up costs? What kind do you get and can you get them at local stores or just online? How do you clean them (I know should be obvious, but I'm really in the dark in this subject) and how much laundry is expected?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

  • Check out this post, and the blog in general.  it has a lot of great information on cloth diapers (and other EF stuff).  A great place to get some good beginning information.

  • I didn't actually consider CDs until after DD was born. I was tired of always having to run to the store to get more diapers and spend more $$.

The upfront cost is obviously larger. I only buy mine online though some people are lucky enough to have a physical store in their town (not very many of them) that carry some CDs. St. Louis and Pittsburgh come to mind.

You wash them in your washer. I do a cold rinse, regular hot wash with CD-friendly detergent, and then an additional cold rinse. Dry in the dryer. I do laundry every 2-3 days.

My daycare allows them. I love it! There are lots of brands and lots of kinds of CDs, so it's a little overwhelming at first.

  • I use a diaper service and it's great! I throw dirties in a bin and it gets picked up weekly and new clean diapers are dropped off. All of my friends use disposables and I've compared with them and the cost is the same. The only laundry I have is 4 diaper covers and those go in with his regular laundry. I highly recommend using or at least trying a service to start if you have one in your area.

  • They can be very cheap (flats are my favorite and they're dirt cheap) up to however much you want to spend.  As long as you're reasonable about it, you should be able to at least break even using even the fancy diapers, especially if you sell them when you're done.

Unless you have a local specialty store for cloth diapers, you'll be shopping online.  The Gerber prefolds and flats you'll find are crap.

You'll put them through a cold rinse and hot wash probably every 2-3 days, depending on your stash. BF poop goes straight in the washer, poop after starting solids gets dumped in the toilet first (you might find a diaper sprayer handy).

I started with  a stash that I had to wash every other day (24 diapers for NB), and now I wash every 2-3 days, but I can go through two loads before I have to get them folded and put away (4 dozen).  The best thing I did was get into the habit of washing a load of laundry a day while I was pregnant.  Sometimes even now the laundry is the only thing I'm on top of.
