1st trimester miscarriage

Hello, all! I'm new to the website. I'm 9 weeks, 1 day pregnant with my first baby and had my first OB appt w/ ultrasound yesterday-hearing the heartbeat completely melted my heart! I'm still a little nervous, however about getting through these next few weeks without complication. Does anyone out there know when the risk of miscarriage significantly decreases? Anything to settle my nerves would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 1st trimester miscarriage

  • Hello... I have a book that i was reading and it said that 80% of misscarriages happen before 12 weeks which is the first trimester.. Thats when the numbers significantly decrease.

However when i got my ultrasound at 9 weeks and 3 days, i asked my doctor a similar question. He did tell me that the numbers do drop significantly once you reach your 2nd trimester. He also said that when you are in weeks 9 or 10 and the heartbeat is really good then thats a good sign that things will be ok.

I hope this made you feel a little bit better.. Just hang in there and Good Luck..

  • Keep positive, the threat of miscarriage does decrease after your 12 week.

Sending you wonderful baby vibes = )

  • Having been though miscarriages & several rounds of ivf it finally happened for my husband & I. When we found out we were just hitting 4 weeks & all I kept asking was when I'd be out of the woods on miscarriage worries, My doc told me I was going to stress & worry the baby right out of me so I decided to take a step back & just go with the flow so don't stress. It is said typically once you clear the 1st trimester your miscarriage rate is dropped, our doc gave us the reassurance through the heartbeat at 8 weeks, with ivf things go a little different, 1st time we saw the flicker of the heart was at 6 weeks & then at 8 when it was taken again doc said we were good. Maybe she was doing this so I didn't worry but even if she was it worked. Trust me I know it is easier said than done but just remember baby is feeding off everything you are & do, not only nutrition wise but energy wise as well, so to be safe just be happy all the time!!!!!!
  • Big congrats and continued best wishes!

I've had two m/c later in the 1st tri, and it really seems like the "odds" vary based on where you're looking. The common thing seems to be that once you're past 12/13 weeks you're in a much safer place. We unfortunately lost a baby last Jan. after seeing a healthy h/b just before 8 wks and my OB said there was only a 2-3% chance of m/c after seeing the h/b. Since then I've heard from a number of other women on the loss boards who had similar situations, so I still wonder how accurate those odds are.

Regardless, things sounds like they're going great for you right now. I know it's so hard not to worry, but take it one day at a time and remember that you've got a healthy baby in there right now! Best wishes and enjoy :)
