TTC After a Loss

Vent - So Annoyed (adoption mentioned)

We had our adoption physicals (which did go well btw) and during the physicals H had to get a refill for his allergy medication.  The nurse asked him if we had cats or dogs and H responded we have 3 dogs and the nurse made a face and then said "is that going to be ok with the adoption agency?"

Ummm WTF?!  This came up once before with our marriage counselor saying we will probably have to get rid of one of our dogs.  Not happening.  So I'm supposed to give up 1 of my dogs because I'm having problems having children even though I take better care of my dogs then some people do of their kids!  I can't even write how I feel right now because I'm so pissed!  As if I should be punished and give up even more but some 20 y/o can have her 3rd baby and go straight from the hospital to a homeless shelter but I'm the one who could be told I can't have a baby?!  Seriously, where is the fairness in this?  And I know they may not even know what they are talking about, it still just irks me.

  • I hope they're all wrong and the agency would have no problem with your adorable dogs.  I would never give up any of my pets under any circumstance (I have 3 cats and a dog).  If it's really going to make or break the whole adoption process, can you have someone watch one of them for the home visits?  I'm sorry they had to even mention this!
  • That sucks that people say stupid things.  I wouldn't even worry about it unless someone from the adoption agency says something.  That lady was probably just being rude because she is a cat person and doesn't like dogs.

  • That's dumb. When we met with Catholic Charities for foster care, she told us dogs were fine as long as they're not dangerous and the kid is not allergic.

  • STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!!

Yes, there are jackasss dog owners who create a dangerous environment for children. But frankly, they can't take care of their dogs so wouldn't take good care of kids, either.

Families with RESPONSIBLE dog owners are a great environment to raise kids. You teach children boundaries, responsibility, respect, and compassion. Not to mention a wonderful 'friend' for your child!

I can see it perhaps being a problem if the baby was likely to have severe allergies... but that would be an issue with one dog (not just three).

  • That is totally rediculous, and as soon as they do your home visit, they will see how wonderful you and DH are, and what an amazing place it will be for a lucky child to live in. And they will also see how awesome and well-behaved your furbabies are.

    Total crap.

  • I do adoptions all the time (as lawyer) and the adoptive and foster families often have pets. they may check them out, ask for license, etc. but NOT an issue generally. maybe agency by agency though.

    Thanks ladies!

This is great to know mlmtgg! Not only do we have our dogs always current on their shots, microchipped and fixed, but they have pet insurance, we feed them holistic food, they get dog vitamins everyday, and are well groomed and well behaved.  For some people they may think 3 dogs are a lot but they don't know our dogs and for people to make those comments just get me worked up.

  • that is ridiculous.
  • That is absolutely ridiculous.

I cannot stand the idea that someone gets to tell you if you are worthy of raising a child JUST because your medically cannot carry it.  Because somehow, what?  the baby is better off in foster care??

My dogs are disgustingly spoiled but in a good way!  And the worst thing is h spoils them more than I do (there is no doubt when we have kids I will be bad cop) and they were my dogs coming into the relationship.  How many dogs do you know were allowed to be flower girls or a ring bearer inside a Catholic church?

  • The only criteria concerning pets that I have heard of is that some agencies require a certificate/ form from the vet saying they are up to date on shots and not dangerous,  Obviously, if you let your pets tear up the house, potty everywhere, etc. you wouldn't pass the homestudy.  From your description of how you care for your dogs, you clearly have nothing to worry about. I Agencies might have issues if you had a breed that has a bad reputation (pitbull) or a dog with a history of aggression.  Also I'm sure pets like boa constrictors or rattlesnakes would  probably exclude you.
