Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Home from hosp. ER f/u D&C - scary, graphic, long

Hi everyone -

This is a f/u to my post about being scheduled for a follow-up D&C to get the last peice of remaining placenta.  I (like a huge dummy) decided to try the drugs first, to see if I could evacuate "naturally" at home and avoid surgery.  So, I took the misoprostal on Tuesday evening.

First, it was just cramping that started and I started to pass something that I thought was tissue.  But after I passed about 2 pounds of the stuff (I know!), I realized that they were blood clots and not tissue.  After soaking 4 huge pads in one hour, for two hours, I called the doctor and she told me to wait another 45 mins - and then see if it stopped. I was in so much pain and I took some of the painkillers that I had - I don't know how people do this without them.

Well ladies, 45 minutes later, I woke up to GUSHING blood - and went to the bathroom.  I actually PASSED OUT in the bathroom and woke up to DH yelling my name and calling 911. It was really terrifying - I thought that I was going to die, fighting for consciousness and not being able to keep it.  So, 5 mins later, (we live really close the fire station!) there were paramedics, and I was on my way to the hospital.  My doctor came in, and performed an emergency D&C - in the ER - and it was not bad at all - I was "conscious" and talking apparently, but not aware and do not remember anything.  DH was in the ER with me the whole time and it was nothing compared with the huge blood loss and trauma suffered at home - it was just my anxiety about it that was bad.

I lost so much blood that I had to have a transfusion (2 units)- and I stayed in the hospital for 12 hours.

The moral here - Just go for the freaking D&C and don't be scared of it.  Things would have gone so much easier if I just would have listened to my doctor and done it, instead of trying the drugs.   I very easily could have died, or gone into a coma from blood loss - if the gushing blood had not woken me up at 3 am.  DH was asleep - and so was I.

My only hope is that I am finally on my way to physically healing.

I ended up bleeding so much because the uterus was just contracing around the placenta and squeezing out more and more blood - and not the placenta.

  • I'm so incredibly sorry for all you've been through.  During my natural m/c I got really faint once or twice and was terrified.  I can only imagine what you went through.

I'm sending T&P your way - hopefully you are on your way to healing.

  • OMG!!!! I am so glad you are OK!

I have still been spotting 6 weeks after my D&C (I had a really strongly implanted placenta so the surgery took several hours, so it could still just be healing) and wondered if I would have to go back for a followup D&C or take some drugs to get the rest out. My OB said to give it a couple more weeks, so I am anxiously watching and waiting. I will definitely take your story into consideration!!!

I hope you get better soon!

  • That is so scary.  I am glad you will be ok physically, though.  I am so sorry you had to go through that on top of everything else you've gone through lately.  I'm sending you BIG BEAR HUGS and lots of strength...  We're here for you!!!!

P.S. you are so brave to share your story with everyone.  Thank you for doing that and I hope it helps some of the ladies who are about to have their D&C or have to go back again.  You are amazing!

  • How horrible and extremely scary! It's good that you DH found you.My experience was not nearly as bad as yours, but eerily similar.

With my last m/c, I took the misoprostal and ended up going into labor, and did not have the scheduled D&E. At my 6wk post appt, my Dr. noticed some clots and tried to remove them. I started to bleed (and bleed). I was taken by ambulance and had an emergency D&C because I would not stop bleeding. I did not  end up needing a transfusion, but I did pass out. Scared my DH to death. At my post d&c appt., everything was fine and I ended up getting pg again in 3 months, which ended in m/c, too. That, however, is another story...

I think you are on your way to healing. Glad you are doing ok, and I hope your Dr. prescribed you iron.  Smile
