3rd Trimester

Down another 3 lbs. is it time to call OB?

According to my scale at home, I am down another 3 lbs from the day before.  When I saw my OB last week she brought it up, wasn't overly concerned but mentioned it.  Now, I am down even more, is it time to talk to call them or should I weight until my next appointment?  Also, on a side note, I haven't had any morning sickness.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it. Check out this post: https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/28735177.aspx It seems like a lot of ppl lose weight in the 3rd trimester. If you're really concerned about it, though, it never hurts to call your OB, if for nothing else but your peace of mind!

  • When is your next apt?  What was your weight like pp?  Were you under/average/over?  The reason I ask is because I continue to lose weight and spoke with my dr about it yesterday.  I lost more htan a half a pound from Monday to yesterday on the dr's scale and Monday my weight was down from my previous apts weight.  I am overweight to begin with and was told that as long as I am eating enough/healthy it isn't overly concerning.  If your next apt is soon I would just wait for your next apt.
  • If your instincts are telling you that something is wrong, call your o.b. and see what they have to say about it.  It doesn't hurt to pick up the phone.

Nope not really.  I had a 9 lbs spike in the second timester and haven't gained anything since, which has been about 3 months.  Now I'm down a total of 7 lbs since that spike.

  • Have you been eating/exercising differently?  If not, I would call just for peace of mind.

I gained a lot at my last appointment and OB said it was probably water.  I cut out a lot of salt from my diet and have lost about 5 lbs.

I haven't been exercising at all which is why I'm a little concerned.  My swelling from the 2nd trimester has made a return so my nightly walks have be almost non-existent.

  • One of my friends kept loosing weight towards to end of her pg. I think she lost like a total of 10-12lbs in her 3rd tri because she kept feeling sick. They ended up inducing her at 38-39 weeks (can't remember exactly) because she wasn't able to gain weight. Personally, from what I got out of it when we hungout is that she was tired of being pregnant and didn't want to eat. She was depressed and never went out of her house. I know this isn't what you are asking or what you are going through, but they did have to induce her because she wasn't gaining weight.

It probably wouldn't hurt to call them since your OB brought it up. My friend kept loosing weight all through the 3rd tri and they didn't do anything until the end.

  • I've flucuated between 5-7 lbs up and down for weeks now and at my last doctors appointment I hadn't gained any weight. He didn't seem to be worried as long as I was eating and drinking enough. My weight gain has seemed to slow down drastically in the 3rd trimester. The only difference I've noticed is the amount of food I'm able to eat due to her taking up so much of my abdomen.

I was concerned also to see I'd lost 5 lbs the first time this happened because I've only gained 13 lbs my entire pregnancy. If your very concerned a phone call wouldn't hurt if for nothing else but to ease your mind.

Wow, that's a little scary...the thing that's weird with me is I eat ALL THE TIME!  Like I eat a drumstick a day (i love them) and nothing.  I am eating healthy otherwise but you would think my drumsticks would be doing something.  Also, haven't had an issues with depression.  Hmm...maybe I should go ahead and call...wouldn't hurt.

  • Just remembered my dr told me that with some women pregnancy speeds up their metabolism in others it decreases it.  With me it is increasing it so I haven't gained a single pound this pregnancy and in fact have lost enough that I have been able to fit into pp clothes atleast 2 sizes smaller!

If you are worried call, but as long as you are eating and drinking adequately I am not sure there is a lot they can do but monitor.

  • It can be very normal to lose weight in the 3rd Tri. I probably wouldn't call, but I would bring it up at your next appointment if you're concerned.
