Justin has to get a second set of tubes

Justin got tubes in his ears almost 2 years ago, in March of 2008.  Both of them stayed in till this fall, when one fell out.  He got a bad cold at the beginning of December and BAM! Instant ear infection in the unprotected ear.

He's had one since the beginning of December which only lets up during a course of antibiotics, then it comes back.  We had a follow-up consultation with his ENT today, and he recommended a new set of tubes in both ears, AND removal of the adenoids.

His surgery is scheduled for January 21.  Anyone with experience with adenoid removal in their kids (escape1st)?  What should we expect?

Re: Justin has to get a second set of tubes

  • Aww, what a hassle! This is my biggest fear with Leah's tubes. No advice here, but it sounds like he definitely still needs the tubes. I hope you get some good responses!

I didn't know Leah had tubes!  When did she get them?  I guess it's only a small percentage of children that need a second set (between 15-20%), so Justin's a lucky guy.  Hopefully Leah will be luckier!

  • Eli hasn't had his, but both of his tubes are out.  If he gets another ear infection (we have already had one double ear infection... boo), we will likely be following in your footsteps.

However a lady at work hearing about Eli told me both of her kid's did the tubes and adenoids.  She said once the adenoids were out they NEVER got another ear infection (and they are late elementary/middle school age now).  Hopefully that will be the same for Justin!  Good luck Katie.  I know it sucks to see your LO in pain, even if it is for the good.

  • That bites but I am glad they worked for 2 years and hope this time will be the last!  Make sure to have his hearing checked after all is said and done just to make sure all is going normal (speech therapist in me).  Also, I have no experience for for adnoids being extracted on my kids but I had it done when I was younger and it was not bad at all.  I remember it (was like 6 or 7).  Good luck!  Will be praying for him!
Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

  • It must be stressful for you but it sounds like it's best for Justin's long term health. It must be a real downer for him to have a constant ear infection. That must hurt the little guy! I'm hoping this will do the trick for him. You all will be in my thoughts.

  • Oh no!  Poor guy :(  Sounds like this is the best solution, but man, that is rough for everyone.

  • Aww geez.  I feel so bad for everyone here who is dealing with ear infections.  DS had bad ears and it was no fun at all.  13 infections in the first year of life, PE tubes that fell out 3 weeks after insertion, and multiple antibiotics.  I am only posting to tell you that this is soooo temporary.  Once he gets a bit older, ear infections will go away forever.  I am so sorry you have to do a second round of tubes.  I opted not to do that with DS since his post op course was so rough on him.  It was a begging for lots of office visits and antibiotics because of that decision, but they do eventually go away.  I am thankful that DD's ears are better, no infections, and I hope you get the same luck with Tyler.  Wishing you luck with the second surgery.

  • one of my coworkers' 2 year old just had the tubes/adenoids surgery.  I think her recovery time was pretty quick- I think she was back at daycare the next day or 2 days later and eating fine.

  • Aww. Poor Justin (and poor Katie).  I'm sorry to hear this but it sounds like it might be the right thing to do and he'll be better for it in the long run.

  • What a PITA!  I saw your status update about this on FB yesterday.  As much as this stinks, I was laughing at you calling him "beastly" in the waiting room.  You crack me up Katie!  Anyhow... I'm so sorry you are going through this.  Putting your kid through surgery, whether a common procedure or not, is stressful and no fun at all!!

  • Raising my hand!  Nathaniel had his adenoids removed in the beginning of November and it was much better than I expected.  He also got new tubes put in at the same time.  The procedure did not take long and we had about a 3 hour stay in the recovery area...mainly to make sure that he was able to drink fine and that he was responsive.  We had it done at the Surgery Center in Evendale.

We had it done on a Thursday early morning (because he had to fast) and he was pretty much himself by Friday evening.  He was drinking like normal and I just offered softer foods that I knew he loved on Thursday and Friday.  Saturday all systems were a go and he was eating fine, sleeping fine and running around like a toddler!  We were sent home w/ a script for a stronger children's motrin and zithromax, but that was just to make sure that he didn't get an infection and our dr. wanted him to take a shorter dosage antibiotic than augmentin.  We used the motrin script that evening only, but not on Friday.  I'm pretty sure I gave him reg. motrin on Friday in the morning, afternoon and evening, but nothing on Saturday.

Good luck!  I was so nervous about the surgery but like I said it went so much better than I expected!  We have not had anymore ear infections since November, knock on wood.  Nathaniel had 4 ear infections WITH his first set of tubes, so we really miss going to the pediatricians office evey 4 weeks.  LOL  Let me know if you have anymore questions!
