help choosing covers for prefold CD (best fit for first 4 month or so)

Hi, Ladies, i am new to CD, I plan to get 3-4 dozen each in Preemie size 2x6x2 (fits 4-10 lbs), Infant 4x6x4 or 4x8x4 (7-15 lbs) and Regular size 4x6x4 (15-30 lbs). Will probably go with Indian prefolds, i head unbleached are the softest ones. I need some guidance in choosing the appropriate covers to go with those. (everyone seems to love the wool covers, but those are so pricey - i don't think i can afford to invest in those) Plan to purchase a bunch (6-7 maybe?) in the best size to fit to last me through the first 3 months and then maybe i shall have a better idea on what covers will work best for us.

 Please help

My first child was 6 lbs, 7 oz at birth, second one (a boy) is due first week of March, will most likely be somewhere around 6-8 lbs

  • I haven't used mine yet, but I got Thirsties XS and Thirsties Duos size 1 for my infant prefolds.

  • I think you're planning on too many PFs. Order a dozen in the smallest size you want and two dozen in the next sizes that you're considering ordering (I would actually just get the first couple sizes now, make sure you like PFs, then order more if you do.) Because of the overlap in sizes, you won't need the premies very long, if at all. You can always fold the infant size down a bit to fit a smaller baby.

You will probably want three or four covers per size prefold. We always used 3 per size, and never had issues. One on the baby, one in the laundry, one to switch out with when the first got dirty. Any more than four is really just silly, IMO.

I happen to love Thirsties. They work great, aren't really expensive, and come in a lot of cute colors (no patterns.) They have these new Duo Wraps as well, which are like two sizes in one (snaps to enlarge when needed.) If I were you, I would order two or three Duo Wraps in size 1, then one in the x-sm, and one in sm. That way you have the opportunity to see if you prefer the individually sized covers, or the wraps (they work the same but fit a bit differently) before buying a ton of any one kind. It's also more cost effective to purchase more wraps up front than sized covers, because they're only $1 more, but last twice as long diaper-wise.

If you would rather a snap cover (some people hate velcro) then I happen to like the Mommy's Touch covers that Green Mountain Diapers sell. There are other, more expensive, covers out there (Blueberries for example) that are great, but the MT work really well and have some cute patterns.

  • For the newborn phase, we used Thirsties and my LO was 5 lbs 9 oz.  They were x-small and lasted a long time.  However, I will say that now that LO is over a year old I have found less love for Thirsties covers- they wear awfully.  When its the x-small or small size they're only in them for 2-3 months but when the covers get larger and they were them for 6-8 months the wear is AWFUL!!  There's no way they'd last through another child.  We are in the process of replacing all our diaper covers with snap covers- specifically I like Kissaluvs Marvel one size cover (especially since we'll have 2 in CD its nice to have a one size not to mention snaps will last) and Booroi.  We use prefolds and fitted diapers.  Another thing- I have both bleached and unbleached prefolds from GMD and I can't tell the difference.
  • Oh, I'd like to add about your stash amount- we used 2 dozen orange prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers and 1 dz Kissaluvs during the newborn stage and had 4-5 covers.  I never felt we were short.  Like I said above, my LO was very small and they fit fine.  We moved up to the yellow size when LO was about 8-10 lbs and that lasted for several months.
