c-section NOT major surgery?

My friend is having a lap band placed. She has never had surgery before and has no children. It is a laproscopic procedure. I told her it should be a piece of cake in comparison to havin a c-section, which I consider to be major surgery. She told me that she thought recovery from a c-section was a piece of cake. She remembers her SIL being in the hospital for maybe 48 hours!

She's a know it all, so I didn't continue to argue, but I have a huge scare, my stomach muscles will never be the same and don't they remove all you insides during a section to get to your uterus? Anyone else think a c-section is no biggie? One reason why I could not fathom having a 3rd biological child is the thought of them cutting into me.

  • my c-section was a piece of cake and recovery was awesome. but that's not the case with everyone! It IS major surgery.

  • I'm sure her SIL was only in the hospital for 48 hours.  They toss you out almost that quickly after open heart surgery these days.

I never had a c-section, but I'm thinking being sliced open from one side to the other would most certainly be considered major surgery.

  • Maybe she was just responding to your trivalization of what she was about to go through?  "I told her it should be a piece of cake in comparison to havin a c-section," isn't exactly the nicest comment you could have chosen.  I don't think anyone thinks that a c-section is not surgery that requires time to get over.

    this for me too.

  • uh, yeah, your friend is insane.  C-section IS a major surgery.  I think it gets overlooked because most are done while you are awake, so people assume its no biggie...well a MILLION other surgeries, including your friends lapband COULD be done while awake...they just aren't and the only reason a c-section is done awake is because of the mom wanting the experience and seeing the baby.

That said, I would have been annoyed if I was having a lot of nerves before a big surgery (lap band is still a major surgery too, even if it is laproscopic) and my friend replied with "oh, it will be no biggie...My surgery was way worse than what yours will be."  It probably wasn't what she wanted to hear...she probably wanted to hear "it will be fine" and that's it...

  • I've had both a C-section and lap band surgery. The C-section was definitely a much bigger deal, and IS considered major surgery, but I didn't think it was that bad. The lapband is often done as an out-patient surgery. I was pretty much fine after 24-hours after the lapband. However, I would not say that the lapband sugery was a "piece of cake" compared to the C-section. It was definitely easier, but it's still a big deal when you are going through it.
  • I had a really good recovery from my c-section, but it's absolutely major surgery.  Major enough, in fact, that I pushed for a VBAC (and was successful) the second time around because I didn't want to risk another major surgery!

That said, I consider lap band surgery a very big deal too.  Good luck to her with that!

True. I was more trying to make her feel better, but I could see how she could have taken it that way. She is very opinionated; has no troubles explaining what is on her mind. She pretty much continued to argue that I was exaggerating.

  • I agree with you, it IS major surgery. my recovery was so tough. my OB said it was also tougher b.c I was in labor for 12 hours then had an emergency c. he said it's worse when they cut through already tired muscles that had been laboring! :(

I'm hoping for an easier recovery this time since its a scheduled-c.

and your friend doesn't know WTF she is talking about! that's all! ;)

  • While hers is still surgery and I understand her being nervous, I would still not call my c/sections a "piece of cake".

I have a 7 inch long scar above my pubic bone where they cut through all the layers of skin, fat and muscle, as well as into my uterus. The doc made a normal sized incision to start, but my huge-ass babies wouldn't fit and he had to enlarge it. LOL

I had to repeatedly remind DH that although my recovery was smooth, I had still had major abdominal surgery and needed to take it easy.

  • Regardless of her recovery or anyone elses - it can be easy (mine where) and it can be hard - it is still major surgery.
  • people are stupid.  Regardless of anyone's individual recovery experience, it IS major surgery.
  • For me, it was a piece of cake. I was in the hospital for 2 nights for each. I did obviously take it easy, but I didn't have any of the restrictions I see on here re: no dirving, etc. A friend of mine had multiple infections in hers and a terrible recovery. REgardless, I would consider it major surgery.

this for both of my c-sections!  But I have had friends who had horrible infections after.
