Hi everyone
I'm new to the board...this is my first pregnancy. I'm about 5 weeks. I threw out my back and I'm in a lot of pain. My doctor prescribed me codeine and said it wouldn't effect my pregnancy at all. I'm still worried about taking it. Has anyone heard of being prescribed codeine while pregnant? It's so early in my pregnancy that I'm just really nervous about putting it into my body.
Any advise would be great...Im a little anxious!!!
Re: Codeine and pregnancy
I get horrible migraines and when I was around 5wks I had a migraine that just wouldnt go away. My ob told me that obviously the best thing for the baby is to not take anything but being in excruciating pain is worse for the baby than taking a tylenol w/codeine. He also assured me that me taking one wouldn't be enough to cause anything horrible.
I would say if you are in that much pain with your back, call your doctor and see if you can get a prescription for something. Good luck!!
I was prescribed tylenol 3 for migraines while prego. My doctor said it was ok but I was also in terrible pain. I don't take it on a whim.
I think the risk for taking it is higher in the 3rd trimester when the baby could get addicted.
With DS I got a terrible cold with a hacking cough. I coughed so hard I pulled a muscle in my back, so it was incredibly painful every time I coughed after that. My doctor (aka savior) gave me cough syrup with codine.
DS is fine, and I felt SO MUCH better.
i fractured my wrist and was offered tylenol w/ codeine or vicodin at the ER. The random ER dr that saw me used the phrase "probably ok" in regards to me being 7wks pregnant. Now, I'm your typical first-time, rather young, pregnant lady, overly-cautious about everything. I just didn't feel comfortable taking that risk when I was only half way through the first tri. I'd rather deal with the pain... but that's just me. And I didn't have the opportunity to consult my OB.
Best of luck!
