1st Trimester

Got my estimated delivery charge bill

We owe $1280.00 by the 7th month of pregnancy. The total charge is $2300 (insurance covers the difference). It could be much worse. We are racking up the other bills too (pap, bloodwork, etc). Thank God for the 8k first time homebuyer credit we should get in February.

This estimated delivery charge letter makes it so much more real. I am having a baby, omg.

Anyone else gotten theirs yet?

Re: Got my estimated delivery charge bill

  • Indifferent  Is this normal for civilians??? We were military for my first two.

  • I don't know. This is my first. I had no idea they billed this early.

  • We got ours at our second appointment.

We owe $200 by some time.  I can't remember which month though....

  • That's just for your OB prenatal & delivery charges?  We get ours from the MW up front, too.  We're responsible for 20% of the bill.

  • We are responsible for our deductible, which is $3100/year.  So, that is what I'm expecting to pay with our FSA card.  We planned this pregnancy so that I was pregnant and would deliver in the same calendar year so that we didn't get hit twice.  Mind you, this deductible is for any and all of my medical treatments for the year (chiropractor, pap, blood work, ultrasounds, etc)
  • we just pay our deductible too, $4,000, which will be well paid for by the time this baby arrives. Last year my total bill (100% paid for by insurance after we paid the deductible) was $20K. I am expecting the same this time around.
  • With my son, we paid $450.00 for my hospitall bill, which included 4 days in hospital on bedrest.  His nicu bill for the five weeks he was in there was $450.00 as well.  I have great insurance!

  • We just have a $1500 deductible.  We are using some of our tax money to pay it off.

  • I got one of those with DS #1, but it's only for OB. ?The hospital bill was much more. ?Total hospital bill was around 30,000. ?Of course we didn't pay that. ?But once the baby is born you will get bills from the hospital for the baby, and for the dr. for the baby. ?The hospital and the pedi can both charge you seperately. ?Then you have your deductable for the hospital which is seperate from what your OB charges you.

  • We pay around $500, due by the 28th week of pregnancy. They broke it up so it's just like having an expensive co-pay every visit. Last time I just got a bill after I came home from the hospital. Even though the cost is the same in the end, I am glad it's being paid a little at a time and BEFORE the baby is here.

  • Goodness...prices seem so high. Even with insurance. DH is active duty military and we don't even see a bill. By the time everything is said and done, we'll have paid about $20 for food costs in the hospital.

I might seem dumb asking, but are those normal estimates?

  • never heard of such a thing. I am billed afterwards.  Seems silly because it is an "estimate"....anything can happen

  • My ob gives you the bill at your second appt, at well so that you can pay it by 7months. Fortunately we are military so we have 0 out of pocket and don't have to use the military hospital either.
  • At the first appointment, my OB gives you a breakdown of his "global fee".  It's about $3,500 for a vaginal delivery and $4,500 for c-section.  The actual bill doesn't come until after you give birth.  On top of that, I get a bill from the hospital for the delivery and my stay, a bill for the baby's stay, and a bill from the pedi.  We have a $1,500 per person deductible.  It ended up being around $2,000 for DS' delivery.
  • I'm lucky to have very good health care with Kaiser. We just looked up our costs and all OB visits, labor, 1st postpartum appt, etc is all at no charge.

Unless we are reading it wrong and there are other charges we will be looking at a very small cost, which I am ecstatic about!

  • I paid $20.00 for my first ob visit and that is all I pay complete. We have top of the line insurance though.
  • We will be meeting our deductible with the $1280. I am jealous of all y'alls awesomer insurance. Sad

  • My DH has excellent BCBS federal insurance I paid 25.00 co-pay(once), and 100% of pre-natal care, test, bloodwoork, u/s are covered.  When I deliver I will pay $150.00 to hospital. I'm greatful.

I'm with you here.  We were military...but now we're not and I haven't even started seeing the doc.  Now I'm thinking OMG! Indifferent

  • that seems weird to me. when i called to make my first appointment, i was told that we would not be billed at all until after the baby was born.

I think I'm going to ask about it at my next appt. I'm a tad confused about it all.

  • We have 100% coverage for prental, L&D but only because my husband is a state employee. That being said, it does not cover labs or ultrasounds. We owe 20% of those charges.
  • I paid a $5000 upfront global fee to the midwife that included all the prenatal appointments, massage, nutrition counseling, labor and delivery, and postpartum. After the baby is born she bills my insurance (since she is an "out of network provider") for the actual cost of about $12K. Whatever the insurance company sends her (60% of the regional accepted rate of her billing) she gives to me (under $5,000) if it is over $5K she keeps the amount above. Labs are separate but those are getting run through my insurance as they happen and I haven't got a bill yet...

I don't blame you. These prices are kind of scary. I've never seen a bill and I get an U/S at every visit. I'm not HR it's just how they like to do things unless you say otherwise. I couldn't imagine how much we would have racked up in costs so far. Did you guys retire out and get the TriCare Standard (I think it's Standard, I can't remember. We're a LONG way from retirement still.) I think even once DH retires and we're out medical will still be an OMG for us at the rate I'm seeing.

  • Y'all got me wondering, so I looked at my insurance benefits.  I don't understand them at all.  And my OB has never mentioned charges... and has never collected a copay.  I'm starting to get worried that we'll be handed a massive bill at the end.

I guess I need to get on the phone and start getting some answers.  :)

  • I am lucky. I work for a University and if we choose the University insurance (where if possible you HAVE to get treated by the University doctor's and hospital), there is no deductible, no co-pays or anything.
  • My OB's office has you meet with one of the girls in the financial office pretty early on to figure out your benefits and how much you are responsible for.  Not sure what we'll be needing to pay yet, but luckilly my benefits year resets in April, so I will be able to adjust my FSA contributions to be able to cover the estimated expensed for the delivery.

  • My down payment on the prenatal/delivery visits was $900 due the 2nd appointment.
  • Holy cow. I'm glad I married into the military. geez....
  • I just looked into this yesterday. We have good insurance so can expect to pay about $700-$1000 (depending on the type of delivery) after the baby is born. Luckily my husband and I both have flexible spending accounts (empolyer contributed every month before tax) can we can use to cover that and daycare up to a certain amount. We won't end up paying anything out of pocket. I've never been so thankful for good health care in my life.
  • wow, I am shocked at the bills that everyone is having to pay. We paid our $15.00 co pay at my first OB visit - that was it.

We saw the hospital/OB/ped bills which totalled over 40K!
