Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Will she ever stop crying? Re: Ferber/CIO

The pedi suggested we start ferber/cio so that M would learn to put herself to sleep at night. This is our fifth night and she is still crying! I swear everyone I know said she would get it after 2 or 3 nights! The first night she cried for 67 min., then the next night was 26 min, then 22 min, then 42 min. (the day after she got five immunizations) now tonight it was 15 minutes. Will it ever get to where I put her down and she goes to sleep a happy baby?

  • Just because your pedi said to do it, doesn't mean you HAVE to do it.

No doubt. And remember, Drs are there to provide medical advice and care, not to dispense parenting tips.

  • My DD did, my DS not so much.  Still working on him, but I need to sleep.  He is 9 months old.  He does not need me to touch him every 2 hours.  It is killing me.

    this!

we did sleep training with DS and it really just depends on the day. some days he may whine/cry a few mins, some days he just rolls over and goes to sleep, some days he crawls around and stands there and looks around for a while.

I agree.  My pedi mentioned this at my LO's 6 month appointment as an option.  I don't mind getting up at night with my LO.  Everyone is different, but I don't agree with CIO.

  • I am not huge on CIO but DH insists its what she needs. Its not to help her STTN she just can't go to sleep without being rocked.

  • Yes, our pedi told us to do it at 4 months! He's a very kind man, and a good doctor, but seriously. And we still haven't done CIO, although we have a crappy sleeper. We are using No Cry Sleep Solution, and we are already seeing good results, so we'll stick with that. However, I know that everyone's family is different, I would never say no one should do CIO, I just think it's one of many options. And not a necessity.

  • My feeling is this:

Your LO STTN. Why not rock her for 10 minutes? Now you have replaced rocking with 30 min of stressful crying. Not an improvement in my book.

Sorry to sound snarky. I just don't understand messing with what works.

  • How long does she need to be rocked?

     ITA.

  • She needs to be rocked for at least 30 min or until in a deep sleep. If she is not sound asleep she just freaks out when you put her down. At least tonight she only cried for 15 minutes. If it were up to me ALONE I would rock her until she wouldn't let me and beg her to sleep with me every night but I work as a team with my husband and pedi to do what is best and we are exploring our options. I just wondered how long it would take to be able to put her down with no crying.
  • Contrary to what you hear on here and (at least for me) IRL, Ferber/CIO does NOT work for every baby.  It didn't work for my son (we never had to sleep train my daughter).  We tried it, were strict/didn't give in, and 2 weeks later he was still randomly waking up and crying.  So we tried something else.  www.sleeplady.com.  Her method worked for us, was more gentle, and entailed less crying.  I wish I'd abandoned Ferber earlier instead of sticking with it in the hopes that it would work.
  • It's normal to see regression around 5-7 days, just stick to your method. It works. It's a tough love.

It so hard to hear your little one cry though.  But if just to rock her to sleep I think you should rock her.

I nurse DS  everynight before he goes to bed. I wouldnt have try CIO if not for both of us not getting better sleep.

He want to sleep with us or better still we should be there when he wakes up to rock him back to sleep.

We are still on sleep training. You are the mom do what is best for you and your family.

  • it sounds like it's working. some babies just take longer, esp. at only 6 months.  we tried at that age and DS wasn't ready.  he cried a long time also the first night (put your side eye away) and we hit our limit and gave in.  we are on night 2 tonight and he was out by 11 minutes.  it's gone much better. it may just take time.  good luck!

Double ditto. Too long. IMO you should rediscuss this with your husband.
