Breast Fed Baby - Taking Bottle

Hi,

My grandson is 9 weeks old and breast fed..he did take a bottle his first month, the platex drop ins..she hasn't used a bottle for at least the past 3 weeks, and now he won't take one.  She is starting back to work 3 days a week on Monday, then full time in February..does anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to take the bottle or should we try switching nipples, like I said he did take the platex no problem.

TIA

Pam

Re: Breast Fed Baby - Taking Bottle

  • Some tricks we've tried are:

Heating the milk up to be pretty warm.  My breastmilk is pretty warm when freshly pumped so we try to mimic that.  We also pour really hot water over the nipple.

The only nipples my LO likes are the latex (yellow) orthodontic nipples.

Lastly, if he is really fussy when trying to give the bottle, we turn the hair dryer on.  Weird, but it helps!

    Good Luck

  • I ran into this same problem over the holidays. ?We ended up needing to buy different bottles that were the same brand as her paci. ?It could be something that your daughter needs to keep trying and eventually he will take it, change nipples to a faster flow, warm the milk, or try a different bottle.

The bottles that G will now take are NUK. ??

  • There is some good advice and some not so good advice in this link- https://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/nursing/bottle.html#2

It's probably just going to take a lot of time and persistence- horrible as it sounds, she'll eventually get hungry enough to eat. And, if all else fails, she'll end up cluster feeding at night to make up for the missed calories during the day (though obviously, this is not ideal!)

  • my three month old will not take a bottle either. we tried four different bottles, different positions, milk temp, everything! the only thing that worked was an Adiri Natural Nurser and his blanket over his body. My DS only eats 3-6 oz during the day while I am working and cluster feeds most of the evening and into the night.
