If you make your own baby food and freeze it

what containers do you use? I think I would prefer glass.  Most of the containers that I've found that are made specifically for baby food storage seem a little pricey for what they are.

Any recommendations for me?

  • Take the food, fill an ice cube tray, cover in saran wrap and freeze.  When they're frozen pop them out and into baggies or whatever from there.

Get some "to go" bowls with lids and defrost on the go if you need to, or microwave/heat at home.  Easy peasy!

  • I froze the food in ice cube trays. Then once they were solid, I put them in large labeled plastic baggies. I love glass containers (like Pyrex & Anchor), but this was a better method for us because we have a tiny freezer.
  • We aren't at this point yet but my cousin has a 20 month old girl and has been making her food all along.  She puts the food in ice cube trays and then when it's frozen solid, stores them in ziploc freezer bags.  Then she just takes out what she needs - she's got bags of all sorts of food stored.  HTH!

This.  I actually used baby cubes (got them used pretty cheap) but will do this ^^ for #2.  We had a few of the cubes break when we tried to get them out (I didn't want to put them in the microwave, and sometimes we didn't run it under the hot water long enough, apparently, so we lost the cube and the food).

We used my pampered chef glass prep bowls to feed - they have covers when we needed to take stuff on the go, and were the perfect size for a cube or two.

  • I do ice cube trays and baggies, too.  It's not ideal, but it works, and I don't worry about the plastic as much at low temperatures.  Plus, the food cubes are mostly touching other food cubes.

One thing I do try to do is avoid the food processor if possible and especially while the food is hot (clear hard plastic work bowl) and let the food cool before traying it up.  Instead, I like my stick blender (the food-touching part is all stainless steel) and a stainless steel or ceramic bowl for pureeing.

I used to be anti-microwave for thawing and heating, but I've come around.

  • And ditto MTOW on the stick blender.  It is SO much easier than the food processor.  We got a processor for baby food, and then I got nervous about the plastic on it.  I started making sure stuff wasn't hot when I pureed, but then started using the immersion blender.  FAB!  You can do big and small batches without any difficulties, and clean up is a breeze.  Best baby food appliance EVER.

  • I'm with everyone else - freeze in ice cub trays (I have the ones made specifically for freezing baby food but that's not necessary though they do come with a cover which is nice) and then store in freezer bags.  I reused the bags so I didn't feel too bad about that part.

This but I didn't use saran wrap.
