I've read a few posts that have mentioned women did not register at Target because of thier return policy. Why is it so bad? I am a little concerned because this is were we are registered and with things being pruchased I am getting a little nervous!
Thanks!!!
Re: What exactly is wrong with Target's return policy???
2 returns per year per drivers license.
Exchange with receipt.
Wait, 2 per yer even if you have a receipt? Is that new? I return stuff (with a receipt) ALL the time. Well, at least once every couple of months.
I do understand that you are stuck with the item if you don't have a receipt or gift receipt.

That's not true - you can return unlimited items if you have a receipt.
It's returning items without a receipt that is difficult, as it is at nearly every store.
Yes this. And if the item goes on sale, you only get a credit for the sale price. I say eff Target! (bad wedding present experience.)
WHAT?!?! Do they have that posted in the store so people know? I would be highly ticked if I were turned away for a return!
Target will not take a return on anything NOT on your registry without a receipt. However, if you receive something that you didn't register for and want to take it back - just add it to your registry before heading to the store.
The main issue I found was not updating the registry when things were purchased. But, you can always update it on your own (it sucks you have to do that). I don't think it's all that horrible, but just be prepared all returns will be turned into a store gift card - we used towards diapers.

There is only so much you can return without a receipt. with one, yes, you can have more returns.......
but i am stuck without returning some stuff because i met the limit. i had to have my mom take something back under her name because i didnt have a gift receipt.
other places returns are better than target...they dont have a cap amt on $ value that you can bring back in a year. and kohls - i know doesnt have as much baby stuff, but just an FYI, you can return stuff if you took tags off and washed it...my mom bought something and it had a little spot on it, the lady said if you take it home and wash it and it doesnt come out, she can bring it back ebcause the tag on the inside of the shirt has a code on it and they can track that its been purchased at their store.........i thought that was really good
Yep. There is a limit on the number of returns without a receipt even if purchased off registry. At least with BRU you can return anything with or without a receipt as long as you have a registry.
The wedding present I returned was unopened with original gift receipt. (We were not registered there.) It was a $40 item but since it was bought over 90 days before I returned it, I got a store credit for $9.99- yippee. Bunch of BS if you ask me.
Oh, and yea, thats happened to me where they would only give me the sale price. you can only return items that equal a certain dollar amount a year...maybe 40 or 80 dollars? without a receipt. once you reach the limit, they wont let you bring anything back without a receipt until a specific date (that they give you). ask about it.
That is crazy...hmm...it's ashame that people have already been told we are regsitered there or I would move everything to another store!
90 days is pretty much standard at EVERY store.
We received a few outfits from Target that were in odd sizes (i.e. newborn outfits for summer) without gift receipts. Even though they were clearly Target brand, Target wouldn't even let me exchange them for the correct size without a receipt. So that was a major pain.
Also, they totally kept screwing up our registry. For example, items would show up as being purchased one hour, and then show up as not being purchased another hour. Consequently, I received three of the same item--two with no gift receipt. I updated our registry to show that 3 had been purchased, but by the time I got to the store, it had tweaked out again and only showed that one had been purchased from the registry. Consequently, Target wouldn't let me return the other two duplicates.
It was just a pain...but it's the only baby store we have locally, so I was stuck.
And my favorite 'policy' of theirs - if you don't have the gift receipt, you can only exchange it for a 'like' item. We had this with wedding presents too - we returned a Pyrex set because we got mulitples, they told us that we could inly exchange it for a different set....
One thing I have learned, though, like that experience - each customer service rep or even store is different. We took the same set, still no receipt, to another Target and they gave us a store gift card, no problem. I have had other run-ins too, like that, where you just take your stuff and head to the Target down the street and get a completely different answer. They're crazy.
Thank you, that works. I always thought that if it was on your regsitry and yu had to return it they would allow you to do so. Thanks for the clarification.
This is the experience I've had...
Like one PP said, if you get something without a gift receipt, add it to your registry before you try to bring it back to the store and you shouldn't have an issue. Also, if it's that big of a deal to you, call corporate and talk to someone who might be able to help you.
Stores like Target have no choice but to have return policies (strict, unfair, whatever) because there are idiots out there who consistently and repeatedly abuse the system and cost them millions of dollars every year. If you were Target, you would do the same!
We really love Target too. We buy everything from groceries to fire logs there and have never had a problem but I can always have them run my card for those types of things. I was just concerned if somethng was bought off my registry that I wouldn't be able to return or exchange if I got duplicates.
I had to go through alot of drama getting receipts from people who gave me duplicates or stuff I didn't want (while blushing) with my registy for DD, maybe it's just my Target but they would only take back so much per person per trip, and I just didn't have the ability to make alot of trips with a newborn infant, it's just a pain, if I register again, like if I have a boy one day, I won't do it there.
Also, NBR, I got some bedding for DD that we didn't need and tried to return it after X-mas, it cost $40 and they said they would only give me $28 without the receipt, and that's just cheap to me, trying to make a profit off me b/c I don't have a stupid piece of paper, I haven't seen that with other stores. Macy's, for example, took back a great deal of stuff we got for X-mas, and gave us the price it was purchased for without a receipt. I love Target, but will never register there again or buy anything I might have to return one day, I just think they're cheap, I hear they are owned by the French..
They have no way of KNOWING what you paid for it without the receipt. That's why they give you one...
Um, you may say this is true and you family member may as well, but that's not how it worked with my best friends wedding registry. She even added the items (as others have mentioned) before going in to do the exchanges (b/c they weren't on her registry to start with) and got the same old song and dance. 2 exchanges per calendar year if you don't have a receipt (period). I know this, b/c I helped with her registry and was with her. She said it was the same with her sister's baby registry. Therefore, I avoid Target like the plague. I've never been happy with their online shopping either. For example, I bought a GPS from target for Christmas, they shipped me an entirely different model than I ordered and like someone else said in a PP, they want me to have to send it back, get some code and then they'll give me "store credit".
Good luck with your registry.
