WTH are they for? I mean, are you really teaching baby to swim or is it more of an outting, gtg, mommy/baby sort of thing? HOW do you teach a 6mo old to swim??

I think it is to get your LO used to the water so that they are not scared of it. I also think it is just another way to spend some quality time with LO!
We will be doing swimming classes this summer, but DS will be a year old. Here in Miami, lots of water..pools, canals...etc. The sooner they know what to do the better. I am not sure about the 6 month old stuff though.
We taught dd to go under water this summer. And we'll do swim lessons this summer so she knows how to swim to the side of the pull if she falls in. I think it's great to teach tem at a young age and that way they are scared of the water. I can't remember not being able to swim!

No, I understand the importance of baby learning I just don't understand how you teach a child so young! Lil was in the pool allllll summer. She's definitely not scared of water and considering she throws a fit when I take her out of the bath, I hope that doesn't change. I just do not see how you teach a child under a year old to swim. Or hold their breath. Its just mind boggling to me.

See that's why I would do it. Just to have some QT with Lil.

its definitely a mom&baby bonding thing and it also makes it so they arent afraid/less afraid of water. DD & I are starting swim classes this saturday actually. i think it will be a lot of fun. it says online that we'll sing songs and splash around. its just fun
However, in our class we also learned about choking and how to use a lifejacket safely with a baby. We learned how to get in and out of a pool safely with a baby in arms. And, even though my son is barely 8 months, he goes under and holds his breath (albeit briefly). He learned it in swim class. True story.

Awesomeness all around. NOW I see the purpose. Very cool!

For us it's just something fun to do together. It's very similar to Storytime with singing songs, dancing, etc. We go back and forth in the pool doing bobbing and swishing, we lift the babies up out of the water and splash back in (this is a great arm workout!), they "float" while being held on stomach and back, and on a kickboard, and we play with toys in the water.
I also don't think it's a bad thing to get her used to the water at a young age.
We live in a very cold climate, so not many houses have pools and the lakes aren't really safe for swimming. Usually kids can only swim at the Y or if they are staying in hotels, so that's not much exposure to the water, so I think it's good to get as much water time in as we can as early as we can.
I had DS in swimming lessons through Infant swimming resource- he started at 6 months. I did not go in with him- it was just the instructor. At the end of 4 weeks, he was able to roll from belly to back and float for over 1 minute, fully clothed (regular diaper, onesie, jeans, socks, shoes, long sleeve shirt, light fleece jacket, and one piece fleece snow suit type of thing)... as well as get to the surface when "dropped" to the bottom of the pool. It is a very structured program geared towards drowning prevention. Once he is 12 months & walking, he will go for the next phase... which teaches him how to get to a float, roll to belly, swim, flip to back (for air), and repeat until at the side.

That would scare me so much! It's good that he learned it though. It's amazing what they can teach babies to do. Did you watch when they dropped him?
Yup- I went to every lesson (5 days/week, appx 10 min/day)- it actually bothered me when I watched other children getting their lessons- but not when it was Charlie... I knew that she had such rigid guidelines for monitoring him, so I would reassure myself that he was okay... it was amazing to watch how quickly he would learn it!

It is for sure a thing for mommy and baby.
